Our “Red Door Cottage” is located in the quaint historic district of Darien, Georgia. It is a comfortable, 2 bedroom, 1 bath home built in 1906 and lovingly restored with all the modern 20th century conveniences. The home features high ceilings, hardwood floors, central heat and air conditioning as well as ceiling fans in most of the rooms, for those that want that true southern feel. The entire home is showcased with many original works of art, from local artists to the owner's own artwork. The cozy covered front porch opens into the front living area with our original “red door”. This room is the place to relax when there is a chill in the air as it has a gas fireplace, large, comfy sofa and 2 leather chairs. The room directly adjoining this would have been the formal dining area in 1906, but we have decorated it with a long, comfortable sofa, w/chaise lounge and 32” flat panel TV and it instantly became the family room. The kitchen has an electric range, new refrigerator, dishwasher and a lovely large window over the sink that fills the space with light. It is furnished with all the dishes and utensils needed to prepare meals, toaster oven, microwave and coffee pot. The “porch” room adjoining the kitchen is a great place to eat (the table seats 6) and has 2 walls of windows. It has tile floors. The 2 bedrooms are similar in size but one has a black iron queen-sized bed featuring “Waverly” Southern Magnolia bedding. The other has 2 twin beds, decorated with a bright, whimsical feel. Both rooms have original artwork on the walls. The black and white tiled bathroom has a tub/shower combination and a modern pedestal sink. The house also has a new clothes washer and dryer. Step out from the kitchen to the large screened-in porch that leads to the fenced backyard. The screened porch has a table that seats 6 and retro-style chairs to relax in. Situated on a quiet corner with live oaks and plenty of Spanish moss, we are just 3 blocks from the Darien River Waterfront Park and Boat Dock. Rent or bring your own kayaks, don't forget your fishing gear, camera, sunscreen and bug spray. Our town is small but features a number of great restaurants, a wine bar, antique stores and a fantastic art center, all within walking distance of the house. If its beach you want, St. Simons Island is 20 miles south and Jekyll Island, with the historic Rockefeller village/resort and plenty of surf and sand, is just past that. With Savannah (60 miles north), historic Jekyll Island (22 miles south), old plantations to discover, an old Fort to tour, nature trails/tours a call away and tons of delicious, fresh, sweet Georgia shrimp & fish to devour, find time to relax and enjoy Darien.
