JULY 2017 REVIEW: "When planning a family vacation, idealistic visions often precede your arrival: stunning silent mornings with a cup of coffee and a picture-perfect view; bald eagles diving for fish in pristine water; easy outings to explore wild woods and rugged coastlines; friendly shop keepers selling unique treasures to take home; lazy afternoons playing in the yard with the family while music streams through the open windows; time to read, to cook, to do a puzzle, to nap; laughing through a game of trivial pursuit after a bonfire of marshmallows and guitar…. At Featherbed Island, all these fantasies and more came true. This was a perfect vacation for our family. Maria’s magical spot of land is extraordinary — it is in a perfect location if you want to venture down the road and find an adventure, yet, the peacefulness and beauty of the property will make leaving for the day difficult! We stayed for 12 nights and wished we had it 12 more. I can still smell that perfect blueberry pie baking in the oven, while the perfume of the forest and sea mingle in the breeze. We HIGHLY recommend booking this magical Maine getaway!" ****************************************************************** JULY/AUGUST - RENTALS ARE GENERALLY WEEKLY FROM SUNDAY TO SUNDAY ******************************************************************** THE YELLOW HOUSE is very well designed to be both open, yet with plenty of private spaces. -- GREAT ROOM - The highlight of the great room is it’s two story wall of windows overlooking Machias Bay and Featherbed Island. There is a comfortable sofa with QUEEN pull-out, mid-century Thonet chairs and a coffee table made of local beach driftwood -- perfect for putting up your feet. —KITCHEN - Fridge/freezer with ice maker, five-burner gas (propane) stove, dishwasher and over-the-range microwave. —PANTRY - Besides the kitchen, off of the back hallway is an antique ‘cigar-box’ pantry that holds almost every small appliance that you can think of. Our selection does change as appliances wear out, but just to give you an idea — currently we have a blender, Kitchen Aid stand mixer, Margaritaville margarita maker, electric kettle, ice cream maker, Belgian waffle maker, shave-ice maker, citrus juicer, molcajete, lobster pot (of course) with lobster bibs and crackers. We also have pie plates, rolling pins, baking dishes, aprons and cookbooks! —DINING ROOM - There is a large farmhouse table that seats six comfortably under the soft glow of the antique chandelier. There are dishes and glassware for eight. Besides regular drinking glasses, we have an assortment of barware — martini, wine and margarita glasses. -- THE MUSIC ROOM has french doors - left open to expand the living space of the great room, or closed for more privacy. It has several bookshelves with steamy (and not-so-steamy) novels, magazines and children’s books (and, of course several bird identification books) and a closet filled to the brim with board games and puzzles. There are several musical instruments if you have the talent (or even if you don’t). There is a loveseat that pulls out into a twin bed. -- COZY DEN in the back of the house has a flat screen television with a mid-level cable package and dvd player and library of about 100 DVD movies for kids and grownups. There is a sofa and a vintage, turn-of-the-century Morris chair. —FIRST FLOOR BATHROOM - The first floor bathroom has a stall shower and unique river-rock sink. It also houses the washer and dryer. SECOND FLOOR -- MASTER BEDROOM - The master bedroom has an open window overlooking the great room to take advantage of the water views (there is black-out drapery for privacy). The bed is KING size. There is a SMART television (2018) Note: this television does not currently get the full cable channel package. QUEEN BEDROOM - This bedroom is in the front of the house, with its queen bed tucked under the eves. There is a little writing nook overlooking the bay. TWIN BEDROOM - The final bedroom has a twin bed. UPSTAIRS BATHROOM - This bathroom has a shower/tub combination and a travertine, trough sink. OTHER AMENITIES - free wifi (as high-speed as we can possibly get in the area), hairdryer, iron and board, sewing kit, telescope, outdoor games - bocci, badminton, croquet, scavenger hunts, an art easel, quality sheets, fluffy duvets, boho quilts, pillow assortment, thirsty towels, soaps and shower amenities, eco-friendly laundry detergent (when available), rainy day activities for the itty-bitties - legos, indoor bowling, high-chair, charcoal ‘park-style’ outdoor grill, firepit and adirondack chairs, outdoor picnic table. (*not every amenity can be guaranteed to be available every second; unfortunately, as with everything in life, things break unexpectedly and getting replacements aren't instantaneous). Our property is a CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER IN HOSPITALITY; and also certified by the National Wildlife Federation
