Amidst the 24+ villages nestling on the slopes of mount Pelion, Pinakates is regarded as the paradigm of a unique architectural tradition that is safeguarded via strict building codes. Recently, some of the 18th century mansions have been renovated as guesthouses
What is particularly pleasing, is that the new life brought into the village from the outside is balanced harmoniously with the old traditional ongoing occupations. In fact, fruit growing, animal-raising,
Lumbering etc have been given a new impetus
There are currently 2 restaurants, a bakery, small grocery, a ceramic studio and even a small publishing house ! Itinerant tradesmen (fishmonger etc) come through the village daily

At the end of the 19th c a small steam railway was constructed, linking major villages, including Pinakates, with the town of Volos. A remarkable technological feat for the time, the train is newly restored now operates on weekends

The region of Pelio is one of the most beautiful regions of Greece. It is also a region that has been spared from the ravages of mass tourism. Its foremost appeal is the combination of mountain and sea. The mountainous peninsula is made such that within the time span of a 20 minute car drive one passes from beaches and the low shrub Mediterranean maquis vegetation, through olive groves, pine forests, and deep shaded forests of chestnut and birch. All 24 villages that compose the heart of the region have been well preserved architecturally and many are listed and protected. The village of Pinakates is one of the most beautiful of the region

Europe's most southern birch forest borders ancient olive groves. From short walks to multi-night tramps a large network of waymarked trails provides choice for every season: Autumn folliage, summer coastal trekks, kayaking etc
