Validation is a service we offer that allows members to confirm their identity and address through a face-to-face video chat with someone from the Tripping team. You can rest assured that all Validated Trippers (highlighted by a Validation icon on their profiles) have shown us their government issued passport and a current proof of address. We also believe having a member's real name empowers both hosts and guests to do independent research before meeting in-person. Zero Tolerance Policy

We take complaints about a member compromising the safety of a fellow Tripper very seriously. If someone poses a threat to the well-being of our members or the community, we will take immediate action to research the issue and remove the member if necessary.

  • Is Tripping safe?

    Yes - This is because our members honor the trust-based community we are creating and are empowered to make good decisions about their own safety. Most of the time all we need to do to ensure that members have a safe and rewarding experience is help them connect.

    But you can rest assured that we also do everything within our power to prevent and remedy the very few negative experiences that do occur. We are constantly working to improve our internal safety mechanism and help you make the smart choices that will keep you safe while traveling around the world or connecting with members in your hometown.

  • I'm new to How can I establish a good reputation?

    Here are three easy ways to improve the quality of your profile and jump start your reputation on Tripping -

    1. Take the time to fill out your profile with as much detail as possible. And be sure to include all of your incredible photos!

    2. Get Validated so that members will know your identity and address have been confirmed.

    3. Ask your friends and family to leave you a Reference.

  • What should I look for when choosing members to meet, stay with or host?

    Look for members with descriptive profiles that include photos so that you can get a sense of their personality and interests.

    Find members with References and take the time to read them. References give an important third-party perspective and often give a vivid picture of what it would be like to meet a member in-person.

    Seek out members with a high star Rating.

    Try to connect with Validated Trippers whenever possible.

  • I don't want everyone to see my profile. How do I restrict who can view it?

    You can control who can view your profile on your Settings page. You can choose to show your profile to everyone, members only, friends only, only members who belong to your Networks, or just yourself. If you use a restricted privacy setting, members can still message you, but they won't be able to view the details on your profile.

  • Why does Tripping want its members to use their real names?

    We believe that people interact with more integrity when their name is attached to what they do. Additionally, having a member's full name is important information for guests and hosts to have before meeting in-person, as it empowers them to do independent research.

  • I have a nickname on my profile. Will you make me change it?

    That depends - We will not actively seek out members with nicknames and make them change them. But we won't honor requests for new nicknames and will require Validated Trippers to use the name on their documentation for their profiles.

  • Where will my full name be visible on the site?

    Your full name is only displayed in notifications about host and friend requests.

  • Why does Tripping block members with empty profiles from messaging?

    We always recommend that members get to know each other before making plans to meet in-person and an empty profile makes this a lot harder to do. We strongly discourage you from meeting Trippers with empty profiles, and blocking these members from messaging is a friendly reminder that they have a little bit of work to do before they gain the trust of the community.

  • If I have a bad experience with a member, what should I do?

    If you have a bad experience with a member, the most important thing you can do is let the community know about it!

    If you feel comfortable talking about the incident publicly, take the time to leave a negative Reference. Be sure to stick to the facts and stay levelheaded when describing your experience.

    If you don't feel comfortable leaving a negative Reference, you can still pass this important information onto the community by leaving an Anonymous Rating. The member will never know you gave him or her a low rating, but the Tripping team will be notified and may follow up to ensure your well-being and the safety of the community.

    If you feel that the member poses a serious threat to the community and that leaving a Reference and Anonymous Rating isn't enough, please let us know immediately.

  • If I have a safety complaint about a member, how should I let Tripping know?

    We rely on you to be our eyes and ears in the community, so please don't hesitate to bring an incident to our attention. If you have a safety complaint about a member, click here to send us the report. Describe the incident in as much detail as possible and rest assured that your complaint will remain 100% confidential.



  • What are References?

  • Why should I read References?

    References offer an important third-party perspective and can show you what it might be like to meet a member in-person. Ultimately, reading References will help you make good decisions about who to connect with in the community.

  • Do I have to leave a Reference?

    No - But everyone in the community appreciates it when you do. They're critical for our reputation system and every Reference helps make Tripping that much safer.

  • Why should I leave a Reference?

    Every Reference you write strengthens our reputation system and helps make our community safer.

    Also, writing References is a great way to help you remember the experiences you have with Trippers, both at home and while traveling.

  • Are References anonymous?

    No - References aren't anonymous. Your name and profile photo will appear next to the References you write.

  • Do I have to host or stay with a member to leave a Reference for him/her?

    No - You can also leave References for friends, family and online acquaintances. But we strongly discourage you from leaving References for people you don't know well, as this compromises the integrity of the system.

    Keep in mind, References left by members who have met in-person hold more weight than References for online acquaintances.

  • Can I edit or delete a Reference I left for someone?

    Yes - You can view, edit and delete the References you've written for other members on the Manage References page of your profile.

  • Can I delete a Reference someone left for me?

    No - You can only delete References that you've left for other members.

  • Someone left me an unfair Reference. Can Tripping delete it for me?

    It's unlikely that Tripping will delete any of your References, as both positive and negative References are very important for the safety of the community.

    If you think one of your References is unfair or untrue, we recommend that you contact the member who left it and work together to resolve the issue. If you are unable to resolve it and need help moderating the situation, you're welcome to contact us directly anytime.

  • When should I leave a positive Reference?

    You should leave a positive reference for a member if you have a good experience with him or her.

    Here's an example of a positive Reference:

    "Paulo is a great host! He welcomed us into his home and later showed us around the lovely town of Cascais. In addition to being friendly and knowledgeable about his culture, Paulo introduced us to the best ice cream parlor in Portugal. I enjoyed staying with Paulo and I highly recommend him to other travelers!"

  • When should I leave a neutral Reference?

    You should leave a neutral Reference for a member when your experience was neither overly positive nor negative.

    Here's an example of a neutral Reference:

    "I hosted Christina last week - she's very nice and she has interesting travel stories. That said, she wanted to go to sleep at 9pm every night, which put a serious cramp in my social life. This is a neutral reference because - while I liked Christina personally - her sleep schedule was inconvenient for a night owl like me."

  • When should I leave a negative Reference?

    You should leave a negative Reference if you have an experience with a member that makes you feel unwelcome or unsafe. If you have a bad experience with another member, please leave a negative Reference as soon as possible.

    When writing the Reference, please stick to the facts and be as fair as possible in your assessment of the situation. We take negative References very seriously as they help us identify members who pose a risk to the community.

    Here's an example of a negative Reference:

    "I stayed with Ray for 2 days. The first day was fine - we hung out and cooked dinner together. The second day we went out to a local pub, where we had a few drinks. After returning home, Ray tried to kiss me. I told him repeatedly that I wasn't interested, but he persisted until I went to bed. While nothing actually happened between us, other female travelers should know what they might encounter when staying with Ray."

  • What is the Travel Support Line?

    The Travel Support Line is a service we offer our members to help them while they're out on the road. Members can send us questions 24/7 and we'll do our best to get them the information they need as soon as possible.

  • How does the Travel Support Line work?

    Members send us a message through Tripping or email their questions directly to We then do everything we can to find the information they need to solve the problem. We send this information back to the member either through email, phone or text.

  • Can anybody use it?

    We'll always do our best to help a traveler out, but the full Travel Support Line service is only available to Tripping members.

  • If I'm in an emergency, can you help me?

    If you're in an emergency, you should contact local emergency services immediately.

    If you send us a message, we'll always do our best to support you, but we can't guarantee that we'll be able to help you in an emergency. If you're interested in this type of support, we suggest looking into travel insurance providers before your trip.

  • How do I request support?

    You can send your requests through the Contact Us page or email your questions directly to


  • Do I have to host?

    Tripping appreciates the generosity of you offering your home to travelers, but we never expect or requires you to do so. Most importantly, we want you stay happy and safe while using Tripping and that might mean declining a host request or opting out of hosting altogether.

    Even if you don't host Trippers in your home, you're still an invaluable member of the community and can be an amazing resource for travelers. Try meeting up for coffee, showing a Tripper around town or sharing important tips about how to stay safe in your city.

  • When is it safe to give out my personal information?

    We always recommend you get to know members before giving them any personal information. If you've read a member's profile and messaged back and forth a few times on Tripping, it might be the perfect time to share phone numbers so that you can chat and get to know each other better.

    You should wait to share your address with a member until you feel completely comfortable. Depending on how much you've learned from a member's profile or through messages, you may want to talk on the phone or plan to meet outside of your home before giving out your address.

  • I've changed my mind and don't feel comfortable hosting someone I've already accepted. What should I do?

    It's completely acceptable to change your mind about hosting, especially if a member has said or done something to make you feel unsafe. The best thing you can do is let the member know as soon possible.

    If a member has already given you his or her phone number, it's a good idea to send a quick text message about the change of plans in addition to sending a message through You don't need to explain why you've changed your mind, but it's always nice to offer an apology and give any suggestions you might have for alternative accommodations.

  • What should I do if I don't feel comfortable or safe with my guests once they arrive?

    If it's a matter of a guest being rude or not following house rules, let your guest know that you're upset and clearly state what you expect. This may be all that's needed to remedy a miscommunication and turn your experience around.

    If a guest makes you feel unsafe, let the member know as soon as possible that he or she will need to leave your house. If you live alone, you can invite a friend to help. The best advice is to stay calm and remember that you have the full support of the community when making a good decision about your safety. After all, Tripping depends on you to listen to your instincts and make the decisions that are right for you at any given time.

  • Do I have to give my guests a key?

    You don't have to give your guests a key. In fact, we suggest you make it a general rule not to give your keys out to guests. After all, you can always change your mind once you've gotten to know them better.

    If you don't feel comfortable giving keys out, we recommend you add a short note about it in your profile. You have the full support of Tripping to make this rule about your home and it's very common for members to do, so there's no need to feel shy or embarrassed about adding or enforcing it.

  • I don't feel comfortable having Trippers in my house while I'm away. What should I do?

    It's very common for hosts to ask their guests to leave while they're away at work or out with friends. We recommend you add a note to your profile explaining that you expect guests to be out of the house while you're away (though we don't recommend detailing specific days or times when your house will be empty).

    When you respond to host requests, remind your guests that they may need to be out of the house at certain times.

    Once your guests arrive, take the time to give them your exact schedule so that they can better plan their excursions.

  • I have nice things that I'm worried will get broken if I host. What should I do?

    The best way to keep your home and belongings safe while hosting is to be clear with your guests about what they're welcome to use, how to treat fragile items and what to avoid using altogether. Trippers have every intention of respecting your home and often just need a clear explanation of how to do it.

  • My guest didn't show up when we were scheduled to meet. What should I do?

    Unexpected delays can happen when traveling. If your guest is late, try to leave a message with the information he or she will need to connect with you later.

    If it has been more than 24 hours and you are concerned about the member's safety, you can contact us at Tripping and we will do our best to help.

  • Are there more resources to help me prepare for meeting and hosting Trippers?

  • What are Anonymous Ratings?

    Anonymous Ratings are one of the most powerful tools to help you assess the reputability of a member. Our 5-star Rating scale is based on an aggregation of anonymous feedback from members and other important reputation factors.

  • How are Anonymous Ratings different than References?

    Ratings are an aggregation of member responses to specific questions about safety and are submitted anonymously.

    References, on the other hand, are narrative descriptions of experiences that members have had with each other and are not anonymous.

    Additionally, only members who have participated in hospitality exchange with each other are allowed to rate one another, while friends, family and online acquaintances can leave References.

  • Do I have to rate a member?

    No - But everyone in the community appreciates it when you do. Ratings are critical for our reputation system and every time you leave one, our community becomes safer.

  • Why should I leave a rating?

    Every time you rate a member, you're strengthening our reputation system and are helping keep other community members safe.

  • When and how do I rate a member?

    Once you've finished staying with or hosting a member, the Rating questions will automatically appear when you click to leave that member a Reference. Simply answer the questions and submit your response.

  • How many stars should I give a member?

    Here is a basic guide to leaving ratings:

    If you had a good experience with your host or guest, you should give 5 stars!

    If you had a pretty good experience, you should leave 4 stars.

    If you had a neutral experience - neither overly good nor bad - you should leave 3 stars.

    If you had a fairly negative experience, you should leave 2 stars.

    If you had a negative experience and believe the other member should be removed from Tripping, you should leave 1 star. This will alert us, and we'll be able to investigate the matter more thoroughly.

  • Can I edit ratings after I leave them?

    No - Once submitted, your ratings are final and can't be edited.

  • What will happen if I give a bad rating to a member?

    If you give a low enough rating to a member, Tripping will be notified. We may follow up with you to ensure your well-being and to help assess whether the member will need to be removed from the community. Don't worry - your feedback and involvement will always remain anonymous.

  • Who is allowed to rate me?

    Only members you've stayed with or hosted are allowed to rate you.

  • Who I am allowed to rate?

    You are only allowed to rate members you have stayed with or hosted.

  • Do I have to stay with or host someone to rate him/her?

    Yes - You must engage in hospitality exchange with a member in order to leave a rating.

  • How are Ratings calculated?

    We have a sophisticated algorithm that aggregates anonymous feedback from members with other key reputation factors. Revealing exactly how we calculate Ratings could compromise the safety of our members, so it's top secret.

  • I know my answers are anonymous, but will members be able to figure out that I gave them a good or bad rating?

    No - Before we include your response in a member's overall Rating, we'll wait until a sufficient number of ratings have been left in order to ensure your anonymity.

  • Why don't Ratings appear immediately?

    To ensure that your responses remain anonymous, we wait to include your feedback until a sufficient number of ratings have been left. It may take some time before a Rating appears for a member.

  • When will my Rating appear?

    We can't tell you exactly when your Rating will appear, as this would compromise the integrity of the system. But we can tell you that the more you host, Trip and leave References, the quicker your Rating will show up!

  • I don't like my overall Rating. How can I make it better?

    The only way to increase your overall Rating is to get higher ratings from future hosts or guests. For tips on how to be a better host or guest, check out our Safety Tips.

  • Can Tripping change my Rating for me?

    Because Ratings keep our community safe, it's unlikely that Tripping will adjust your overall Rating.

  • What is Validation?

    Validation is a service we offer that allows you to confirm your identity and address through a face-to-face video chat with someone from the Tripping team.

  • How does Validation work?

    We'll arrange a face-to-face video chat via Skype, where we'll ask you to hold up your passport and proof of address. Once we update your Tripping account to match your information, a Validation stamp will appear on your profile.

    Your privacy is very important to us, so please note that your information will remain 100% confidential.

  • Do I have to get Validated to use Tripping?

    No - You're welcome to use Tripping even if you're not Validated. We simply offer Validation as an added safety feature that gives our members greater peace of mind while traveling and hosting.

  • Why should I get Validated?

    Once you've been Validated, other Trippers will feel more comfortable meeting, hosting and staying with you.

  • How do I get Validated?

    All you need to do to get Validated is gather up your documentation and schedule an appointment. Click here to get started.

  • What do I need to get Validated?
    • Your passport

    • A proof of address (e.g. a recent utility bill)

    • A Skype account

    • Access to a computer with a webcam, microphone and high speed internet connection

  • I don't have a passport. Can I still get Validated?

    We're only accepting passports for now, as they are the most standardized form of identification internationally. You're welcome to contact us if you have any questions about this.

  • What can I use for a proof of address?

    We will accept any of the following documents as proof of address if they are dated within the past three months:

    • A utility bill

    • A bank statement

    • UPS/FedEx/mail receipt card

    • A deed, mortgage, monthly mortgage statement, or residential lease

    If you don't have a proper proof of address, please let us know. We may be able to send you a postcard.

  • I don't have a proof of address. Can I still get Validated?

    Please let us know if you don't have a proof of address! We may be able to mail you a postcard to use during your interview.

  • What is Skype and how do I get it?

    Skype is a free Internet calling system with integrated video chat capability. It allows us to conduct a face-to-face video conversation from anywhere in the world!

  • How long is the Validation interview?

    It's quick - your call will take about 5 minutes.

    If you'd like to ask us questions about Tripping, we'd be happy to chat with you for a bit longer.

  • Who will I talk to during my interview?

    You'll get to chat with someone on the Tripping Team. This is a great opportunity for you to ask questions about Tripping, give us feedback and learn about what happens behind-the-scenes.

  • How will members know I'm Validated?

    Once we've confirmed all of your information, we'll put a Validation stamp on your profile.

  • How much does Validation cost?

    It costs us about $15 every time we Validate someone, so we're asking for help cover our costs. This fee supports the Validation process as well as the Tripping community. If you're unable to pay this fee for any reason, please feel free to contact us directly to learn about alternative ways to set up a Validation Interview.

  • Why does Tripping use this process to validate its members?

    Some websites verify the identity of their members by accepting a credit card payment. While this is a fairly good measure, it's not the same as actually talking to someone in-person and taking a direct look at their passport.

    Plus, Tripping is all about making personal connections and this is a great way for us to connect with our community. We're all excited about talking to you and other Trippers!

  • I can't get Validated right now. What else can I do to help members feel safe connecting with me?

    If you can't get Validated right now, here are a few things you can do to help members feel more comfortable connecting with you:

    • Make sure your profile is rich with information about yourself.

    • Take the time to upload a photo album or two.
