It's beautiful here! Our three story, fully updated 2BR, 1.5 BA beach home was built in 1904, and is located right on the waterfront at the very end of Hake Road. The house is built into a hillside and there are about 25 stairs from the parking a …
We found the house and location wonderful. The place had historic character, many handsome architectural features, nice furnishings, and many extras that made it a particularly fine space for families, especially a pair of in-laws and their son's family who also hosted local relatives for several evening meals. There is a grill for cooking delicious meals, board books and toys for small children, an outdoor hosing-off spot for muddy children, a hot tub for evening relaxation, a deck over the beach for observing shoreline life and birds, and of course the two kayaks that gave hours of exploration time on the waves. We also enjoyed the nearby Dockton Park play area and docks.
After arrangements fell through for our annual Spring Break stay on the coast at Moclips, we scrambled about for a spot closer to our home in Tacoma and simply could not have scored a more accommodating and restful place to unwind than this beach place on Vashon. My last-minute query was met with an enthusiastic and prompt response from Amanda and we were very shortly set up for a five-night stretch.
Having stayed at a number of vacation rentals all over the world throughout the years, we've come to expect certain lapses in stock/supply items or occasional shortcomings in comfort arrangements and will haul in or over-pack to cover the missing stuff we believe we may need. There was nothing however, lacking in this regard at the beach place. The house is quite literally stocked like a personal residence with every need anticipated. One might expect adequate dishes, bowls, basic utensils, cooking pots and a decent pan but there was plenty of all the basics and loads of extras...we were pleased to find a pastry brush and a handy tea strainer given I hadn't packed mine.
Elsewhere, there were extra linens, towels and even robes to use on the dash back in from the spa. The home is outfitted with newer electronics....flat-screen television, ipod docks and the wifi connection was excellent everywhere in the house. With a nod to responsible island living, the homeowners encourage a light refuse footprint by providing appropriate recycling bins and clear instructions on their use. Cleaning supplies and equipment are all natural, accessible and available for use.
Everything is clean, comfortable and in excellent condition. The environment could not be better set for small children...safety features abound and there are loads of games, toys, art supplies and even a small playhouse on the main floor. Kayaks are available for use and the harbor provides a great environment for exploring. The beach house is technically on Maury Island, tucked up into Quartermaster Harbor at the little enclave of Manzanita. The towns of Vashon, Burton & Dockton are minutes away and there is always some community event...music, art, theater, etc....going on. The Farmer's Market is now in season in Vashon....pick up a Beachcomber or Loop newspaper for a schedule of events and community news.
Having lived here all our lives, we've always been very fond of Vashon Island. We were immensely pleased with our stay at the beach house and would encourage you to visit yourselves.
The pictures cannot do justice to how charming and beautiful the house is. We had the most relaxing time, in an incredible setting.
The owners obviously put great deal of thought into every detail. The kitchen is fully equipped with all cooking equipment we needed. The TV had basic cable and a DVD player, but the kids much preferred to look out the windows at the water and wildlife. There were plenty of games and activities for our 3-year old.
Beachcombing is incredible here. A short walk along Manzanita Beach around the spit to the south gives views of Tacoma. Our kids had a blast looking for geoduck clams or just skipping rocks.
We went on two amazing kayaking outings (but learned to never try this during high winds!).
There are other great hiking opportunities nearby. Don’t miss the beach at the Point Robinson lighthouse.
Vashon’s downtown, about 20 minutes away, has several great restaurants, but you’ll want to make the house your home base as much as possible. We can’t wait to come back!
We had an amazing time! This is such a cute home, perfectly tucked away on quiet West facing beachfront. The house was amazing, with tons of character and plenty of room for everyone, and beach and sunset views from every room. We loved the hot tub, and exploring the beach! Our favorite part was the large Sand Dune just a few houses up the beach. With driftwood to explore, a rope swing, and soft sand, this made playing on the beach possible even at high tide!
We had so much fun, and hope to come back!! Thank you!
This is a charming home in a fantastic location on the water. We loved the spacious wrap-around porch that is just perfect for evening cocktails or relaxing during the day on the swing or hammock. The kitchen is very well equipped and maintained. We thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub on the deck overlooking the dock and water. It's the perfect getaway location.
New private guest house This is a two story, detached guest house that was recently built by me, the owner. I have built a number of high end homes and houseboats like the one in Sleepless in Seattle. It reflects my interest in good design and function, blending a mix of modern craftsmanship. I built all the doors and windows, the cabintry and built-ins; even the bed and dresser. The guest house is entered along a path by the 1910 bungalow that I also restored, and through a gated patio that the guest house opens onto through french doors from the bedroom. The downstairs has radiant heat flooring and an exposed wood ceiling. Upstairs is a sitting area that opens on to a deck that looks out across to Beacon Hill. Walking back through the house you pass the cozy breakfast nook, and into the galley style kitchen, featuring cabinets of lacewood and maple.
The neighborhood is very quiet residential, a 5-10 minute drive to Columbia City or 20 minutes to downtown. There are lovely walks through Genesee Park and along Lake Washington.
