An Oasis in the Centre of the City - Surry Hills
Surry Hills is the most vibrant and exciting place in which, to live. It is the home of artists and creative people and is replete with restaurants, theatres and galleries.
There are numerous original clothing shops and interesting gift shops. Th …
We had planned a girls get-a-way week in Sydney. One lady in our party had a friend that lives in Sydney was turning 90 years young, and we were there to celebrate her birthday. We couldn't have chosen a better place. The location was perfect since we didn't rent a car. We (the four ladies) were able to walk everywhere. The grocery store was right around the corner, the restaurants were everywhere. The train station was walking distance, and the buses were down the street. The house was very comfortable it suited our purpose and was a better option than staying at a hotel. We were able to cook breakfast every morning before hitting the streets. One night we even cooked dinner and we had all we needed to make the meal. The one bathroom for four ladies was a challenge however we worked well with each other. Lindy(the owner) was so very helpful with our planning, we only had a 3week window to plan due to our work schedule . Her patience with the four of us sending in the deposit (in US dollars ,then converting it to AU dollars) was wonderful. We so loved working with her. I would stay there again and again.
This looked ideal for a family visiting for 8 days to celebrate a wedding! However we arrived to a quality far below the standard offered. A broken pipe had resulted in water oozing up through the floorboards in the kitchen and dining room and a terrible smell. Extensive renovations next door meant the light through the walkway was completed blocked and made the area gloomy. We were told a plumber would be there the next day at 7.30 am with a jack hammer to investigate the problem. The only place to wash after using the toilet downstairs was the kitchen sink. We had booked for 5 adults but the 3rd bed was not made up and the manager told us we would find linen in the office. That linen was not clean so we used other linen, even though it was stained and carrying the lipstick of previous guests. The roses left for us were brown with drooping heads. A plumber returned and connected hot water to the kitchen and made provision for waste water from the washing machine. We were unable to secure 3 external doors that evening including one that had no latching system at all. We informed the manager that we could not take liability for security, and she insisted that it could be made secure and hung up. We managed to secure one end of the apartment. We contacted the owner to explain our inconveniences. She replied to say sorry the pipe was broken and that her manager said all the beds were ready. 2 visits from a locksmith and 48 hours after our arrival the house was secured. We found a tarpaulin and laid it over the still oozing floor. On the third day a second plumber advised us that the pipe had been broken for a minimum of 3 weeks and the water bill would be high. We began to turn off the water when we were not using it to help the owner. We advised the owner of this on the fourth day of our stay and requested compensation. She replied that everything in Sydney was booked, she was unable to re accommodate us and apologised for the discomfort. Our request was not acknowledged. On day 6 of our stay a neighbour arrived to say he had 3 inches of water in his courtyard coming from the property and guests coming for lunch. We passed on the contact details we had.
Coming from the hospitality and accommodation industries we were shocked how inadequately this unfortunate situation was dealt with and hope quality has been restored to this property. One week after our return the balance of the bond was returned plus some compensation but no communication for 10 days.
What a lovely, lovely home. I stayed here for a week in September 2013 with two colleagues while we attended a conference, and we all really enjoyed it. The neighborhood is charming, and the house's location is very central -- it was a nice morning walk to get to the conference every day (at the Powerhouse Museum), and then no matter where we ended up in the city at night it was always easy to get back home. And it did feel like home from the very first day. The house is sunny and spacious, with plenty of indoor and outdoor space. We often had coffee on the upstairs deck in the mornings -- the outdoor areas just entice you to relax. I think the layout of the house is pretty clear in the description, but just in case another version helps: the house basically has two halves separated by an internal courtyard. One half has the two bedrooms and the office (with the sofabed), and the other half has the lounge/living room, dining room and kitchen. The sleeping half has the full bathroom, and the living half has a WC. You can go between the halves through the ground-floor courtyard or a walkway on the floor above it. This layout works really well for weary travellers: even when my colleagues were sleeping, I could sit my jet-lagged self in the living room and make a cup of tea and some toast without worrying that I would wake them. And then when I did fall asleep I knew I wouldn't be woken up in the early morning by everyone else moving around making breakfast. Later in the week, when we were all adjusted to the time zone, it didn't matter if one of us wanted to go to sleep early and the others wanted to stay up to work or chat or Skype. Brilliant. All of our other conference-attending colleagues were in cramped hotel rooms, and we were lounging around on the cushy sofa sharing a bottle of wine from the amazing shop around the corner, or sitting on the deck under the shade umbrella with our feet up. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat whether in Sydney for work or play. Highly recommended.
This is a lovely apartment with a good deck and a sheltered courtyard. It is a great location with restaurants, pubs and shopping all close. It has lots of character and we will certainly stay here again.
We rented this Surry Hills home for a week - this was our first stop on our very first trip to Australia and it was the perfect location for our group of 5. We had 3 generations with us - a 12 year old, 2 50 year olds, and 2 80 year olds. Lindy's home is just beautiful and we were welcomed with fresh flowers in every room. The home is fully stocked with everything you need in the kitchen, baths, laundry, and office. And the entire apartment is absolutely beautiful including the courtyard garden area and rooftop dining area. We found this to be a much nicer and more economical situation than putting 5 of us up at a hotel. The location is wonderful - right in a very artsy district with tons of restaurants and coffee shops. The bus system is wonderful and we were able to get to any part of the city easily. Lindy's description of the home and the area is dead on and she was terrific to deal with answering any questions ahead of time and after. We would happily rent it again!
Situated in a delightful neighborhood and conveniently close to public transportation. Apartment was a unique and surprising dwelling and was a pleasure to return to. We were sorry to leave after our week. It'll always be one of the highlights on our holiday in Australia.
Lindy was reachable at all times and her house has all the comforts of home. We had a few questions during our stay and she answered her phone right away. She was cheerful and extremely helpful. There's a reliable cab company to call for a ride to the airport, which you can book the day before from Lindy's place. The automated message recognizes Lindy's phone number and confirms her address to pick you up. I stayed on the line to reach an actual person to be safe but there was probably no need. Fresh flowers throughout the house upon arrival. The courtyard is just spectacular and sunny. Lindy's listing was spot on in terms of location, house photos, restaurants, etc. The kitchen had all the bells and whistles of my kitchen at home. There was a small organic market around the corner and two large markets within walking distance so we made great use of the kitchen and BBQ. When our kids left, we went out for dinner in the neighborhood and the food was the best we had throughout our three weeks in Australia. We went to a Japanese restaurant one night and Vietnamese the next. We all watched a Rugby game at The Clock Bar and Restaurant on the corner. The drinks were terrific with some unique choices but all 6 of us did not enjoy our meal. Would recommend stopping in for a drink for sure. You can walk (if you have time) or bus anywhere. We did it all. Opera house, Bondi Beach, Paddington Market, the Rocks, Watsons Bay and more. We would stay here again.
My husband and I recently stayed here and enjoyed every minute of our week in this charming house. The location could not have been more perfect - near everything in Surrey Hills and just steps away from Crown Street where you can catch a cab to anywhere else in Sydney you might want to go. Central Train station was a 10 minute easy walk although we never walked back from the station as there is a fairly steep uphill on the return. The house looks just the way it does in the photos to include the fresh floral arrangements in several rooms which we found to be a lovely touch and the mattresses and bed linens were top notch. The owner Lindy was always easy to reach via email before our trip when we had questions and she rang the house while we were there to make sure everything was ok. There are a couple of good groceries nearby if you plan to use the kitchen and loads of great restaurants abound if you don't. We would definitely recommend this to others but perhaps not to those people who like everything shiny and new. This is an older home and is therefore full of character which we love but some people certainly do not. We would absolutely stay here again without question!
Three of us stayed at Lindy's house during the first week in July. The weather was a bit of a challenge for us (we are from Guam and Hawaii) being the middle of the winter, but the house was warm and cozy despite the chilly weather. Everything is as Lindy describes and pictures on the VRBO site. The location is great, not down by the biggest hotels at the harbour, but so close using the train from the main station or a bus. The neighborhood is upbeat and provides many excellent restaurants and shops, and there is a grocery store around the corner. Having a washer and dryer as well as the ability to cook was a real plus. Walking to Oxford Street or the station is easy, although there is a bit of a climb on the way back from the station. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely like to come back again to stay at Lindy’s house, perhaps during the Australian summer! One tip: before going out to by your groceries, check the pantry and freezer to see what others may have left. We did not and bought things we needn’t have purchased. Then leave your nonperishables for the next tenants!
we had a wonderfull stay at a truly unique home.
Lindy was very helpful and pleasant to deal with.
location was fabulous, neighborhood was fun with lots of varied spots to dine all within a short walk, excellent food stores to shop at also in the immediate neighborhood.
downtown area was easily accessable by walking or bus if so inclined. We would highly reccommmend this property to anyone to use as a base to visit Sydney and its attractions. Sydey has some of the nicest people we have met in all of our travels
The location was perfect for a week's stay in Central Sydney, with shops, bars, restaurants and all the major attractions within walking distance.
The house itself was great - loved the quirky layout and it worked for us as there were no children staying.
The only downside was that the BBQ wasn't working and we had to make last minute alternative plans for dinner guests one evening.
All in all, I would stay there again and would recommend to friends planning a trip to Sydney.
We had a great stay in Surry Hills. We loved the fresh fruit, fresh flowers and clean house. So close to the quaint and nice Surry Hills. Also close to the buses and trains that take you to wherever you need to be. Lindy was great to work with! We would highly recommend this place.
Very cozy and welcoming home in Surry Hills. Loved the fresh flowers and bowls of fresh fruit to welcome us. The neighborhood is great and full of very nice restaurants. Bus stop only a few steps away from the house takes you to Circular Quay, Botanic Gardens, Ferries.
My husband and I stayed here with another couple for a week, and we couldn't have asked for more! The house is lovely and in a very desirable location . . . we were able to walk to downtown Sydney with ease, and the Surry Hills neighborhood is full of great shops and restaurants if you want to stay closer to home. The house is well maintained and had everything we needed for our stay. Lindy was very helpful and easy to deal with. I would highly recommend this rental . . . if we ever visit Sydney again, you can bet we would book this place!
An inviting home-away-from-home that looks just like the picture! We enjoyed watching the birds from our outdoor patio, while just half a block away were all the amenities of the city - groceries, good restaurants, taxis and buses at our beck and call. We loved walking the neighborhood as well - with its shaded streets and not-too-hectic thoroughfares. If we come again, we know where we'll stay.
