The house was exactly as described, a great easy to access location for our family to stay in during a wedding locally. The owner was a delight to deal with--rapidly answering any question, large or picayune. Neat as a pin, with televisions in enough rooms to keep everyone up to date--and even a bit of Wi-fi available at the picnic table to our surprise. The owner had enough keys for us all--some even with loyalty cards (thus discounts) to the local grocer--Shaws. Just a few steps up the road is an alternative (whoops we need more milk) shop too.
This property is well-maintained, modern and very clean. Four bedrooms and three bathrooms make it perfect for those wanting their "own space" when vacationing with others. It is in a very quiet location, but close enough to Stowe to enjoy the great restaurants. We ate at Firefox (Italian dining) and would definitely do it again! The owner was incredibly helpful - even arranging for our late arrival (10 PM). We've stayed here twice and will most likely stay again. I would recommend this to all of my friends (except for the weeks we want).
What a wonderful vacation! We went in begining of October, the leaves were perfect! The house is immaculate and so cozy! All the comforts of home! Our children loved the river that runs on the property and the trails are perfect. Our dogs loved the river also, every day they trotted off to the river wagging their tails with joy! Nancy was a pleasure to work with. We loved Stowe and plan to return year after year. Thanks Nancy
This is our third year staying in this very warm and welcoming house. The two previous years were in late July and this year we were fortunate to hit peak foliage in late Sept-early Oct and it was truly magnificent!
The house is immaculate, well-maintained and has all the creature comforts one could ask for. The kitchen is open and well-equipped and the bedrooms are large and quite comfortable. Our two Shih-Tzus love the cool slate floors for afternoon naps after running around the large, very private field beside the house. Check out the old chair lift hanging beside the stream behind the house. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning. There are two Adirondack rockers out front overlooking the pond. We were surprised one day by a visit from a Great Blue Heron.
The house is a just up the road from the north end of the Stowe Recreation Path making it easily accessible for a daily bike ride to town and back. There are great paths for hiking a short drive up Mountain Road. Bingham Falls are just a short 15 minute hike from the road and are a must see. We also recommend taking the Toll Road up Mt. Mansfield. The hike along the ridge to the Chin offers some magnificent views, including Lake Champlain on a clear day.
There are so many activities and events to take advantage during the Summer and Fall. In July we especially look forward the VT Mozart Festival in the meadow at Trapp Family Lodge. It’s a great place to take a picnic and enjoy beautiful music, incredible sunsets and dazzling fireworks after the show. In addition to the great “eye-candy” of the fall foliage, don’t miss the Oktoberfest the last weekend in September. There’s also a fun Ghost Tour by lantern in the evenings.
We are grateful that the owners share this wonderful house and give it our highest recommendation. We look forward to our visit every year and are counting the days until our next vacation there.
We have been going to Stowe for many years. In fact, I proposed to my wife 15 years ago at an old family place up on Edson Hill, so it has a special place in our hearts. Stowe is a great place to visit in nearly any season; this year we had an opportunity to visit for the foliage over Columbus Day weekend. As first time renters of this house, all family members agree it is a beautiful place to stay! The house is very clean, very well appointed and located in the perfect spot for access to both the mountain and town.
The kitchen is spotless with all the essential gear for preparing meals. There is a long table (longer than the one in the picture) that easily accommodated 8 of us. The gas fireplace/stove was simple to use and kept the whole place warm. The beds are new, mattresses comfortable, linens new and clean; plenty of extra pillows so you can find just the right one. Bathrooms are large and clean. Upstairs Jacuzzi tub was a real bonus after a long hike and ride!
The house is just a few minutes to Smuggler's Notch just up the Mountain Road. From there we hiked to Sterling Pond; if you have not done it, you absolutely must. Bring your camera, and make sure you follow the trail beyond the pond to the chair lift (Sterling Lift) at the top of the mountain and the views are like none other! Following the Mountain Road back down into town, the house is just minutes from all of the best restaurants Stowe has to offer. Since we have young kids we stick to casual places like Gracie's or the Shed. We were VERY disappointed that Miguel's is closed, but rumor says it will reopen in '09. Also, the house is just a 1/5 mile from the start of the Stowe Rec Path, used for biking and walking. We are big into biking and it was great to not have to load the bikes in the car and have to drive them to the trail!
Another key feature was the property. There is a small pond on the property and my son was so excited about this because he loves to play with his remote controlled boats, so we brought them up and had a blast racing them around the pond! As well, there is a beautiful river/stream just beyond the tree line behind the house that adds to the peace and serenity of the home.
All in all, we had a very positive experience and for our next trip to Stowe we will definitely rent this home again. I would recommend this home as a great place to stay to anyone who is interested in experiencing all that Stowe has to offer.
We just got back from another perfect Stowe vacation. We've been going to Stowe, VT, for more than 15 years and this was one of the nicest stays we've ever had. We usually stay at one of the resorts, but this year it wasn't available for our vacation week, so we decided to once again try HomeAway. As usual, the home was clean and neat. This particular home was airy and roomy, the grounds were beautiful, with both a pond (with brown trout in it) and a stream in the woods. There was outdoor seating all over the grounds, even down by the stream. There was plenty of info available in the home for things to do in Stowe, and the nearby towns are also full of things to do. The kitchen was well-appointed with lots of counter space and cabinets, there was plenty of sitting room at the table, and the den had good seating, too. The beds were clean & comfy, the decor was pleasing, there were drawers and closets for our clothes, the baths were large and the upstairs tub is a jacuzzi. Even our pups had fun. There were well-maintained trails in the woods and fields for us to wander. We did our usual favorites: Cold Hollow Cider Mill, Ben & Jerry's, a visit to Gardener's Supply Co. up in Burlington, poking around Stowe Village shops & renting bikes and kayaks for the Recreation path and rivers. I also spent a huge amount of time bird-watching on the property while my husband and family were busy (Usually sleeping - Birding is an early a.m. hobby) I saw over 50 species of bird in the week we were there. I even had a couple of customers at the hummingbird feeder I brought up with me! Speaking of food, almost all of the restaurants in Stowe are wonderful, especially Mr. Pickwick's and Foxfire Inn (Pickwick's still makes the best Beef Wellington..ever!). Some restaurants can be pricey, though. Partridge Inn is not as good as it used to be..the popovers are hard and there are quite a few items missing from what used to be a fabulous menu. The new owners also raised the prices quite a bit. I miss "the snails". They had the best escargot.. and while the lobster bisque is still good, there's not as much lobster in it, and it's only available as a special, not on the regular menu.
All in all it was a wonderful home, a wonderful vacation, and at this point, as long as we are welcome and the owner has availabilty for the weeks we get vacation, this is now our top choice for where to stay in Stowe!
