We absolutely fell in love with the Little Bird Cottage during our weekend stay for a friend's wedding. Every detail of this charming little gem reveals the heartfelt hospitality of owners Kathy and Bruce. The bed is SO comfortable that not even the time change from the East Coast disturbed our sleep. The little kitchenette is perfectly outfitted for breakfasts or enjoying a midnight snack. As a tea lover, I particularly enjoyed being able to heat up the kettle for my nightly "cuppa." The bathroom amenities were pristine and very graciously outfitted with white fluffy towels. It is perfectly situated in Sebastopol without feeling too "in the middle of it all." While visiting, check out the Armstrong Redwoods, eat at Peter Lowells, and of course, sample some of the local wines!

From concept through the details Little Bird is perfect.
My husband and I were lucky enough to stay at this little jewel for 8 lovely days.
Kathy is the most charming hostess. After a very brief but thorough introduction to Little Bird and the area she quietly slipped away - but returned unobtusively leaving little gifts on the front porch every few days:) Unfortunately we didn't have the chance to meet Ken.
The cottage is exactly as represented - immaculate and oh so comfy. Welcome gifts, fluffy robes and a bed so comfortable you don't want to get out of it...but so much awaits.
Over morning coffee you can watch quail, jays, finch, chickadees and even wild turkeys wondering around the property (the later in search of Kathy’s delicious raspberries apparently).
Beyond being fun to explore, Sebastopol is perfectly located for exploring neighbouring communities. It is an easy drive to Healdsburg (try Willy’s for lunch) and Sonoma (a visit to the mission is worthwhile). Magnificent vineyards too numerous to mention are within easy driving distance. Try Rochioli for a picnic and pick up a bottle of their fantastic Sauvignon Blanc – Kathy even provides a very well equipped picnic basket! A day trip to Bodega Bay for a beach walk followed by a stop in Guernville at the Stumptown Brewery makes for a fun outing. Don’t miss the Sebastopol farmers market on Sunday – it’s like stepping back in time.
On your return to the cottage you can sit by the fountain in the late afternoon sun and ponder your options for the evening – to stay home and munch on the wonderful cheeses, pate and fruits you picked up at Whole Foods, to cook dinner in your own kitchen or to head out to one of the many area restaurants. Try El Coronel if you like Mexican or Hopmonk for pub style eats and atmosphere.
We travelled for 9 days after leaving the cottage and on a regular basis (probably daily) one or the other of us would refer wistfully to Little Bird.
Thank you Kathy & Ken – we sincerely hope to return.
My husband and I stayed at Little Bird Cottage for our 10th anniversary and couldn't have picked a better place. The cottage was exactly as shown in the photos but even better! Comfy bed, great outdoor sitting areas, perfect kitchen and bathroom. Kathy and Ken were the perfect hosts! The goodies (wine & dessert) upon our arrival were a welcome surprise enjoyed outside the cottage after a long travel day. The location was perfect as well! There were so many wineries nearby we just couldn't fit them all in during our stay. Kathy gave us a few suggestions (Dutton-Goldfield, Dutton Estates, Balletto) which we highly recommend as well. We also traveled to nearby Hartford Family Wines, Sonoma-Cutrer and Korbel. Since it was our 10th anniversary we were looking for a romantic place to have dinner. Kathy scored again with a suggestion to River's End in Jenner-by-the Sea. The restaurant is located on the coast and the sunset view was amazing, along with the food! When visiting Korbel, we also recommend going to Armstrong Woods which is a few short miles up the road. The trees are absolutely breathtaking! So if you are planning a trip to Sonoma County, make Little Bird Cottage your place to stay! I know we will the next time we are in wine country!
I stayed in Little Bird Cottage with my husband and our baby daughter while we were visiting wineries in the Sonoma and Napa areas. We had a wonderful time, and the cottage is beautifully equipped. It looks tiny from the outside, but the interior is so well-thought-out that you have everything you need within a bright, airy open-plan space. It was spotlessly clean and the bottle of wine on arrival was a lovely touch. We enjoyed a drink under the stars in the hammock outside one evening once our daughter was asleep, and we cooked in every night. All in all, it was perfect for our needs and we would definitely stay again if we ever come over to Sonoma County from the UK again!
We agree with the other review. Simply a lovely little retreat after our busy wine country activities. Many small touches that mean so much when you are traveling. The hosts have done a wonderful job of making this studio a comfortable and cozy place to stay. We hope to return again.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Little Bird Cottage. Kathy was very warm and welcoming, and I very much enjoyed chatting with her. She was also helpful when I asked for recommendations. The cottage is truly immaculate...literally not a speck of dust anywhere! Every detail of the décor is exquisite, and the surrounding area is lovely. There were so many nice touches, as well, like the welcome wine/treat, robes, coffee and cream, etc. The cottage was just what I needed for my weekend of relaxation and restoration.
I enjoyed shopping and dining in both Sebastopol and Petaluma, and spent a nice day at Goat Rock Beach (in or near Bodega Bay). Throughout the area I encountered many friendly people. The entire weekend was wonderful and I highly recommend the Little Bird Cottage!
We chose to stay at "Little Bird" for a quick get-a-way, and couldn't have been more pleased. The cottage was immaculate, and beautifully decorated in a French-country style. Kathy greeted us when we arrived and took some time to show us some features of the cottage. She made herself and Ken available if we had any questions, but other than that we had all of the privacy we wanted. The cottage is well stocked and comfortable for longer stays. It is close to downtown Sebastopol and all it has to offer. We enjoyed eating at Hopmonk Tavern, Peter Lowell's, The Gypsy cafe, and the Hole in the Wall restaurant. We took day trips to Armstrong woods and the California coast. All within an easy drive. And of course, there is plenty of wine nearby! It was a great trip, and being able to stay at Little Bird was the icing on the cake.
If I could, I would give the Little Bird Cottage 10 stars! It couldn't have been more perfect, in any way! My husband surprised me for our 5 year anniversary with an adventurous trip but I think my favorite part was coming home each night. Kathy and Ken have thought of everything you could possibly need and have attended to every detail! Even a little gift and hand picked flowers for our special occasion. The bed is luxurious, the decor perfect and inviting and the kitchen is stocked full of anything you could possibly need to cook or prepare meals. It's location feels tucked away in the countryside but is so close to the little downtown area of Sebastopol and surrounding areas. We went horseback riding in Bodega Bay and kayaking down the Russian River. Neither of which were too far of a drive. I asked my husband if for our next trip away, he could surprise me with staying at the Little Bird Cottage again!
Little Bird Cottage: exudes romance, offers a tranquil setting, is close and yet far away from everything. Explore expansive Sonoma vineyards, quaint Sebastapol, rolling countryside, hidden coastline. This cottage more than meets expectations with all the comforts (hammock, indoor and outdoor sitting areas, and plush linens & robes to wrap yourself) and conveniences (full kitchen and wifi). We will certainly fly back often in the years to come.
"Be like the bird who, pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her, and yet sings, knowing she hath wings." Victor Hugo
We have stayed at a number of VRBOs and this by far was the best. We were blown away right from the moment we pulled up to this beautiful cottage in Sonoma. Kathy was right there to greet us and was very helpful answering our questions and giving us suggestions for food and places to go. Then we walked in to this beautiful home away from home. What made this VRBO stand out was all the little personal touches from the welcome note and sign to the bottle of wine and delicious treat in the fridge.
Kathy had a binder with all the info, maps, wineries, restaurants and places to go that made our time there wonderful.
After being there for 3 days we said we would love to stay another week. Hopefully we will be back. I can't say enough about the place! We were a little skeptical since all the reviews were wonderful - thinking can there really be a perfect place. But this really was a perfect place with amazing hosts! We only saw Kathy at the beginning and then she left us to enjoy the cottage. We sought her out at the end to personally tell her how much we enjoyed the cottage.
We highly recommend it - you will not be disappointed. It is a perfect location - so close to the pacific coast, and both Sonoma and Napa Valley!
Thanks Kathy and Ken!
Are stay at Little Bird Cottage started with a bottle of local wine and chocolates waiting for us upon arrival ! The cottage is wonderfully decorated and and has all the ammenities we could ask for.Down a country lane and very private the setting was as described !! Fantastic in everyway! Kathy and Ken are very gracious hosts and made my wife's birthday extra special ! We will definitely be back !!!
My husband and I enjoyed four days at the Little Bird Cottage; wrapping up our California visit. It was a perfect end to our vacation. Kathy greeted us with such a warm welcome and she had so much info ready for us as it relates to Sonoma activities, map and such. We previously inquired about cycle rentals and she had produced cycling info for us (although we are novice). We did a self guided cycle tour in Sonoma using Wine Country Cyclery; which is highly recommended. We spent a day at Armstrong Redwoods and Bodega Bay too.
Enjoyed the bottle of wine, cupcakes and the cozy cottage that was prepared for us. Thank you for sharing your Little Bird cottage.
A million thanks for welcoming us with such warmth and kindness. We have stayed in many VRBO rentals in North America and Europe, and your cottage is #1! for cleanliness, resources, location, and attention to detail and genuine care for your visitors. We could not have asked for more-other than more time-four nights was simply not enough-would love to come back with our hubbies and kids! Thanks again. Here are the TOP 10 THINGS we liked about our stay at Little Bird in Sebastopol:
1.Fluffy white robes!
2.Fresh raspberries and lemons
3.Sticky buns and scones at Wildflour Bakery
4.Chilled wine and chocolate
5.A nap in the hammock
6.Cycling from St. Helena to Calistoga (scenery wonderful)
7.Picnic supper at Bodega Bay.
8.Peter Lowell's X2
9.Sonoma at dusk
10.The beautiful people (that's you!)
This cottage is cozy and simply beautiful. A perfect gettaway. Totally private and lovely. The hosts are wonderful too. Don't miss a chance to stay here.
Thank you for all your hospitality and the nice touches like the great wine, yummy strawberry chocolate sauce, and lemons from your garden. Where they Meyer? Little Bird was the perfect size and place to relax and soak up the sounds and smells of the beautiful countryside. Our only complaint is that we wished we could have stayed another month or so! Your weather was awesome and all the sights were amazing (Armstrong Woods, Point Reyes, rolling green hills, etc., etc.). We really love where you call home. Of all the places we visit in the country, I don't think we ever had as good of time as we do in your neck of the woods, and Little Bird Cottage helped make our experience this time the best of our visits. You can be sure we'll be sharing our experiences with our friends and highly recommending your place. Thank you (and Ken) for sharing Little Bird!
Ken and Kathy are wonderful hosts, and the way they've set up this great vacation space reflects their genuine hospitality. Not only is Little Bird Cottage beautifully decorated (just like the photos) but it's thoughtfully set up in just the way you'd want to welcome guests to your own home. We cooked a few meals there over a long weekend, and we found absolutely everything we needed, including a few Ziplog bags and Tupperware for storing leftovers, and even a few staples in the pantry. The linens are lovely, the fireplace is mesmerizing (all the more impressive because it's gas), and the space could not be cozier. The location is great, just outside of downtown Sebastopol but along a quiet private road. We wouldn't hesitate to return, or to recommend Little Bird Cottage to friends.
Little Bird In Big Country
My wife and I are from the big city of Los Angeles. Our stay at Little Bird Cottage was the right choice for a couple of tired, haggard, overworked minions suffering from urbanitis. We wanted all the peace and tranquility of the California countryside, but didn't want to give up on any of our citified creature comforts. The cottage is a large studio size (approx. 15 X 20 ft.) space with a well-equipped kitchen, private bathroom and sitting area in addition to the comfy queen size bed w/ potbelly stove/heater. We were warm and cozy at night and awakened to abundant sunshine streaming through many windows with eye-catching views. We lacked for nothing and we were provided chocolates, wine, fruit, friendly smiles and hospitality from our hosts, Ken and Kathy. More than kind people, they sensed our need for privacy and serenity, but close enough in case we needed anything. They left us a basket of champagne and chocolate on New Year's Eve and decorated the front of the cottage with festive holiday lighting that added the perfect touch to our seasonal vacation. And the cable was great for college football access.
The surrounding Sebastopol community was so scenic that we wanted to soak in as much as we could. We travelled everywhere by bike and discovered the little towns of Graton and Forestville. Kathy knew we biked, so she left us a bicycle guidebook which proved indispensable to our trekking. Graton has two great places to eat, Underwood and Wildwood Market, but the closest best place to eat is in Sebastopol at K & L Bistro. It's French, it's reasonably priced, and it's got a Michelin STAR! Sometimes we didn't want to miss football games, so we got take-out. Sequoia Burger makes the freshest burger, the fries are formidable, and Viva Mexicana is to beans as Sonoma is to grapes. After two days of biking our immediate area we were ready to branch out a bit. We took our bikes to other outlying towns. Everything around is close to Sebastopol. It's the hub of all the best places including Sonoma, Windsor, Glen Ellen, Healdsburg, Bodega Bay, Kenwood, and Santa Rosa. We loved all of them and look forward to returning in the spring.
I am going through major changes in my life and found myself at loose ends. I could not have chosen a better place to be than "Little Bird Cottage". The cottage was beautiful - all clean and white - very calming. The trickle of the fountain outside and, the little birds at the feeder added to the feeling of "home".
Kathy was delightful - made me feel like family. I can't say enough about her attention to every detail and the obvious care she gives to the cottage. I felt so very welcome (and pampered) - just what I needed. Thanks again, Kathy, for everything.
My husband and I decided to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary in Sonoma County and began our search for a special place to stay. After narrowing our search, we contacted several properties regarding their location and amenities. I knew I found the perfect place after I read the description and details about Little Bird Cottage.
Kathy greeted us when we arrived at the Little Bird Cottage and showed us around. A welcome tray included a great bottle of wine and brochures featuring local activities. She surprised us with two delicious gourmet cupcakes decorated with a grape motif. Kathy stopped by mid-week and dropped off the sweetest raspberries and tomatoes harvested from her own garden.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to your beautiful town of Sebastopol. We were close to one of our favorite wineries (Dutton-Goldfield) and well situated to visit the towns of Sonoma, Healdsburg and Calistoga. We also explored the beautiful coastlines of Pt. Reyes, Bodega Bay and Jenner north to Ft. Ross. We saw miles and miles of pristine and nearly isolated coastline.
Highlights of our trip included a visit to Wild Flour Bakery (the scones are out of this world!), a tour of Bodega Artisan Cheese (an artisan cheesemaker featured on the Sonoma Marine Cheese Trail), wine tastings at Joseph Phelps Freestone Vineyards, St. Clement Vineyards and Sbragia Family Wine (each of these tasting rooms offered a personalized experience not soon to be forgotten), lunch at Spud Point Crab Company (order the crab sandwich and clam chowder to go and drive up to Bodega Head for a picnic with spectacular views!), dinner at the Himalayan Tandoori & Curry Restaurant (located 5 minutes from the cottage and perfect after a long day of traveling) and a shared appetizer at Barndiva in Healdsburg (where most of the ingredients for the food are grown or raised close by).
Well thought out amenities were included with the cottage which helped to make our stay even more enjoyable. The compact but well-appointed kitchen allowed us to cook several times during our stay. We enjoyed a delicious Coffee and Pepper Crusted New York Strip Steak which was cooked perfectly on the newly purchased gas grill Kathy provided. The Adirondack chairs were positioned to enjoy the view of the night sky which was lit up with too many stars to count.
Thanks, again, Kathy and Ken, for sharing Little Bird Cottage with us and for your incomparable hospitality. It was a wonderful week that went by too quickly.
Little Bird was a perfect place to stay while up in Petaluma for a retreat at the nearby Strozzi Institute. The cottage has everything anyone could possibly need--spare toiletries, kitchen, cosy fireplace, and more. The light is lovely and the cottage is incredibly clean. It felt very homey right away.
I'm gluten-free and Kathy even went to the trouble of making me some gluten-free brownies--she told me everyone gets a treat at Little Bird!
I'd definitely stay here again and recommend it highly.
