Free standing extremely private cottage. Gracefully serene, hidden by trees and flowering vines. colorful gardens with eating and sitting areas tucked here and there.

this was a perfect find for my wife and me. we enjoyed a long weekend and were able to vary venues by hosting the local friends we were visiting some, something that's not all that easy to do in a hotel room. the amenities are first-class, and the surrounding flora and birds were quite enriching. the glen park neighborhood acquitted itself well, too. quiet and relaxed while self-contained, just come prepared for some hills to get from BART, the market, or the bar, all of which are about three blocks away. BART and MUNI access mean the airport is a 20 minute ride away, and downtown is ten minutes away. the outer sunset/ocean beach is 15 minutes by car and a little more via train/bus. we'll be back, Johannes and Veronica.
I just noticed that this property received a very unfavorable review. I can't speak to the specifics of the visitor but wish to state the following: A. I have stayed at this property two times for a toal of about ten or eleven nights. B. I never heard any noise during the evening or early morning hours as the neighborhood is in a noise control area. If I had, I would have mentioned it to the owner. C. I do agree that this should be called a studio as the bedroom and living room are the same but the bed IS very comfortable and a real bed. D. I never noticed anyone inappropriately dressed during my stay. E. The presence of the dog was noted in several reviews of the property. I am a dog person granted but the dog was well controlled during my stays. I am truly sorry that the person who recently wrote a poor review did not feel the same way I do. When I come to SF in September, I plan to stay at the cottage if available.
When the bed is in the middle of the the living room it is a Studio, NOT a one bedroom. I am sorry, I really wanted to love this rental, Johannes was very nice and the house clean, but I found the owner's descriptions less than accurate. To call the property "gracefully serene" and "extremely private" is laughable when it is shared by bare-chested, pajama bottom men, a hugely annoying dog that yaps nonstop every time you step outside, and a nail-pounding, saw-ripping, compressor running, three story apartment construction site literally against the back wall. Also, street parking is a major issue, the description states that one can park across the driveway, but upon arrival, it was blocked and I was told that a "guest" was using the space, and I thought I was the guest! This rental may be perfect for a young couple wanting a more European style of a stay, but for us old-timers, look for something else.
As others have said, this is a fantastic place to stay in San Francisco. Veronica & Johannes provide amazing service - tea, coffee, 1/2 & 1/2 in the fridge, cookies, fruit, hairdryer, and even a night light in the bathroom! My husband & I loved the neighborhood (hills included) and Johannes welcomed us with tips about the area, which we found very helpful. We used public transportation for our entire trip and there's a very convenient bus line with a stop less than 1/2 a block away and the Bart just down the hill. We spent most of our time exploring the city, and it was great to have such a tranquil, beautiful place to retreat to at the end of the day. We look forward to coming back again someday!
We just stayed two weeks this amazing place, where everything is in a class of its own: The host Johannes - the garden is a wonder - and the annexe is wonderful - so the message is very simple: This is where you should stay when visiting San Francisco. We spent 3 days in the cottage and just loved everything there ! Thank you so much for your welcoming us ! We will be back for sure !
This is my second stay at this beautiful property and just like my first visit, I was sorry to have to leave. During the one day of rain we had during my stay, I was quite content to stay in the cottage and enjoy the very looking out on the beautiful garden through the very large glass windows that make the cottage such a cheerful place to be. I eagerly await my next visit to beautiful San Francisco both for the amenties of the City as well as the architecture of this property.
This is a great place to stay, an oasis of calm and charm in easy reach of the city centre. Well appointed and so comfy you could easily spend the day at home! It was our first visit to San Francisco and after a long trip from the UK it was perfect, mind you the hill is steep - you have been warned. Happy to recommend to one and all.
We went to San Francisco in February to visit our daughter and grandson and stayed at Victoria's cottage. It was very charming and private. Even though it was mid-winter, there were all sorts of flowers blooming. The cottage was nicely appointed and well designed. My grandson had a great time exploring the garden. It is close to Glen Canyon for hiking and to highways for getting around. It also is close to groceries and San Francisco.
I have traveled to many places in my life and have been to San Francisco a number of times in the past six years, but I have NEVER expierienced an ambience so perfect that one has to experience it to believe it. No matter what I say, it will not do this wonderful property justice. I will try. The smell of the flowers and trees, the beautiful natural light, attention to detail, beautiful wood work, Asian art, a beautiful kitchen with appliances and flatware, silverware, and glassware that are beautiful as much as they are functional, a comfortable bed, a beautiful ceramic tiled bathroom all create a very special environment. I dare to say that had it rained my entire stay, I would have been content to stay in the cottage and enjoy a property that the owner obviously holds dear. The property was clean, the amenities were beyond what one would find in a four or five star hotel, and all claims by the owner in the listing were accurate and truthful. The pictures accurately portrayed the layout and beauty of the cottage. I must say, I was as surprised to find that Glen Park itself is a wonderful neighborhood to stay and I found a number of excellent eating options although I must admit, I did cook one meal in the cottage due to the fact that there is a wonderful market on Chemery Street. For those who like it, I found the French Restaurant an excellent choice. The Thai restaurant was also a great place to enjoy other ethnic cuisine. The cottage is conveninent to buses that take you main muni stations and of course one has the option of using BART which I took from the airport for a mere $8.00. Traveling to downtown using the BART will cost between $1.70 and $2.00 depending upon the specific stop. And yes, it IS minutes from downtown. I hope to stay at the cottage again this fall. Thank you Veronica and Johannes. I will be sure to come again if your cottage is available.
I stayed at this cottage before the holidays. My initial conversations with Veronica and Johannes were warm, welcoming and professional. The photographs, which seduced me to this site, do not do justice to the exceptional beauty and privacy of this little secret place in San Francisco. I am so grateful for this experience. Thank you Veronica and Johannes. I hope to visit again. A short walk down the hill and you're in a little nook of a SanFrancisco neighborhood where everyone seems to be very friendly. An extraordinary experience. Warmly, Sheila
Perfectly secluded yet extremely convenient to city center, etc Also rented a car for a few days for road trips and parking was no issue. Very pretty and unusual garden. Very clean and visually / architecturally well designed studio layout. Dangerously good bakery at the bottom of the hill on Castro St. Good city view from the small park / playground at top of the hill. Only concerns: 1) it is a steep walk to the property from the BART - not an issue if you are fit but others might require a car just for that 2) no full length mirror; only mirror is in bathroom and my 5'6" wife could only see her face - something easily addressed so maybe a non-issue by the time you arrive.
What can I say? This cottage was just an unbelievable find and my husband and I really loved it. The reviewer who commented on the profuse plants and flowers was spot on - coming from the East Coast, it was such a treat to have so many fragrant plantings and blooms (so close to winter) surrounding the walkway and house. It really is like a little fairy tale hideaway tucked into a very pleasant neighborhood. The house was spotless and very nicely furnished - lots of windows as others have commented, but the plantings do offer somewhat of a privacy screen. The bed was warm and really, really comfy. We loved the neighborhood - we had our own car, and parking wasn't a problem (although having a small car helped!). The BART was obviously very closeby, although we didn't use it during our stay. We highly recommend the Canyon Market for groceries and food to heat up at the cottage - a great treat at the end of a tiring day (the one thing that did seem to be lacking was a microwave, but we made do with the range and toaster oven). Loved having a British-style hot water pot, too. We met Johannes briefly the night we checked in, and he was very gracious in offering any help we needed. The washer and dryer are situated in a room right next to the cottage, so are very convenient. All in all, just a terrific place to stay - wish we could go back again soon!
We stayed at owner Veronica Stork’s lovely cottage in Glen Park. Our stay was complemented, with the help we received from Johannes, the caretaker at the cottage and San Francisco itself was fantastic. Glen Park and the cottage have all you will need to stay in great surroundings. To fully enjoy your experience allow Johannes to give you his advice on where to go and how to get there. The property was all that was claimed and made for a great base for San Fransisco sight seeing. The bus on the corner is a great benefit to those on foot and the area coffee shops are better than average, for early morning breakfast. We enjoyed the great time we had there.
The Garden Cottage lived up to the description. A wonderful little retreat in a quiet neighborhood. Johannes was very attentive and helpful. I recommend staying here if you want to feel like a real San Franciscan, more importantly I won't hesitate to return for another stay.
This cottage is beautifully decorated, clean, and comfortable. We loved its unique Asian style and lush garden setting. It's located in a nice, safe neighborhood with many coffee shops and dining options, and it's a short (though steep!) walk from convenient public transportation. Johannes is a very friendly and helpful host. It's a great little idyll in the city.
This cottage was lovely! Nestled in a superbly maintained garden, this was a great place to relax after running around the crowded city. The interior showed just as much attention to detail and the surrounding Glen Park neighborhood offered convenient access to food and groceries.
The first thing that strikes you as you walk up the stairs to this delightful cottage, is the profusion of exotic flowers blooming in every nook and cranny. As you enter through the glass doors, there is a feeling of peace and tranquility. The cottage is beautifully furnished, well appointed, and immaculate. Luxurious sheets and towels are provided. There is a couch and a chaise lounge, in addition to a very comfortable queen bed. The kitchen is fully equipped, and extra touches like fruit, chocolate, tea and specialty coffee are provided. Wifi and TV are included. Probably the best part of our stay was getting to know Johannes, who provided bus schedules, itineraries, restaurant tips, and great conversation. Because of his help and suggestions, our stay was all the more special. The cottage is a two minute walk to the bus, and about a 10 minute bus ride to the Castro. You can walk to the BART, and wonderful restaurants. Check out Tygers for breakfast, Osha Thai, Gialina Piazzaria (best thin crust ever!), and the market. All within a five minute walk. Please note that the walk up to the cottage is very steep, so if you have lots of luggage, you'd be better to take a cab or shuttle. There are no curtains on any of the windows, which can be a little disconcerting. Other than that, the palce is heavenly!
