The rental home is beautiful. Joan is a gracious host. And the resident pup Bogey is just the icing on the cake. We could not have asked for more perfect place to celebrate Thanksgiving with our family. If we are ever in San Fran again, we will surely be back.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Great location. Near public transportation, if you use Zipcar, there are two places within a couple of blocks with multiple cars in each. A relatively inexpensive parking lot if you're driving a car. Whole Foods and other shopping within a couple of blocks. Joan, the owner, is very helpful with all information about the area area. The apartment itself is perfect. Great kitchen, lovely patio, comfortable beds and all very charming. The pictures are very accurate. We would definitely rent this apartment again when we are in San Francisco and would recommend it to our friends.
We had a wonderful time at Joan's lovely Victorian flat. It is centrally located near the plentiful shops on Haight St. and Golden Gate Park. It is also a short walk to the train which can take you to all parts of the City. This was a great experience for my husband and myself, along with 3 teenagers. A place for everyone to sleep and something for everyone to do. I enjoyed reading in the secluded patio before everyone woke up. The flat was charming and well-stocked. We would definitely stay again!
We (my wife and 2 teenage children) stayed at this property for 5 nights in early July. The house was wonderful, beautifully furnished and with an excellent location. We used it as a base to explore greater San Francisco (visiting Stinson Beach, Muir Woods) and to live in the city. We played tennis in Golden Gate Park and used the muni to get downtown. There were some excellent restaurants within walking distance and a Whole Foods store to pick up groceries. Joan and her playful dog, Bogie, were always at hand to answer questions and to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The house is well maintained and has everything you could need. We would stay again in a heartbeat.
We had a good stay! We spent 3 nights here to enjoy SF. After having spent 6 nights in New York in a hotel it was so nice to stay in a home again! The apartment is spacious, and well equipped. The small garden is nice to drink a beer and get some sun (if there is any). We and our kids (14,12 and 9) also loved the large television screen where we watched Escape from Alcatraz the evening prior to our visit. Joan was very generous and the kids were allowed to borrow her 2 steps to race from the hilly sidewalk, and the football to play a bit in Golden Gate park. Public transportion was very close by, as were many shops. The people from the bike shop on Haight St were also very helpful and had excellent bikes in all sizes. We cycled a full day through Presidio, over the Golden Gate bridge, to Sausolito, and then back by ferry to SF. The only potential drawback is the fact that one could hear the other renters in the apartment on the second floor- this was a family with young kids who woke up early and started running around. It didn't bother us at all but it is good to know that things may get a bit noisy in this lovely old house.
This was a great apartment in a fantastic location. We had a wonderful stay!
We were so sorry to be staying only four nights in this picturesque and very interesting part of San Francisco. Public transport was very convenient and service good, with buses running often to many other suburbs. The apartment was very comfortable and clean with lots of space to spread out. Cooking and clothes washing facilities were impeccable. Joan was very helpful and easily contactable. We wouldn't hesitate in recommending this wonderful, well appointed apartment.
My husband, sister, brother and his wife stayed at Joan's place for four days. The apartment is a perfect size. It is in close proximity to Golden Gate Park, Haight Street, and you can easily get to many other neighborhoods from her place. The kitchen is fully equipped. The garden in the back is also lovely. We didn't get much use out of it because we weren't there for long periods of time. Parking is difficult, but there is a parking lot about two blocks away on Stanton that charges $11 a day. We will be headed back to San Francisco in two years, and if this place is available, we will absolutely stay here again. Joan is a wonderful host!
Myself and a couple friends stayed a Joan's place over the new years. Everything was wonderful. Unit was clean, beds comfortable. Location was great. Blocks from grocery store, bars. Laundry on site. Joan was a wonderful host. Would definitely stay here in the future! Thanks Joan!
A home away from home, truly. We stayed for 5 days with our 4 yr old - Joan (the owner) provided a cornucopia of toys for our little one! The ground floor apartment is light and airy and has a tremendously large and inviting kitchen. It is very peaceful and quiet. The bedrooms were large and comfortable, and the living room was gorgeous. The apartment is located on a beautiful street, a couple of blocks from the Park, the Haight and the heart of Cole Valley, and 10 minutes from downtown on the Muni. Of all the places we have sampled on the VRBO, this one ranked at the top of the list. We will be back.
The owner was helpful and hospitable.
We rented this flat for visiting family members (including our 92 year old mother) and it was perfect--everybody was very comfortable in this spacious and lovely home. I highly recommend this place for folks that would have a hard time managing lots of steps as the entrance is right on street level. Joan, the homeowner, and her adorable pooch, Bogey, were wonderful hosts!
Thoroughly enjoyed my four days here. Very nice flat w/ lots of great books! Great kitchen. Convenient to Haight St. and a number of good restaurants on Cole. Zazie was a treat for lunch. Joan and Bogey could not be more hospitable. Hope to stay here again in the future.

      Unique Victorian Apartment
<span>PROPERTY DESCRIPTION</span><br /><span>"Wonderfully unique" - just two words that only touch on the elegance and wonder that this unit invokes. Designed by the world-renown architect James Francis Dunn in 1890, the building itself is a main focal point of both tourists and residents alike. Only 1 block from Alamo Square Park and the famous "Painted Ladies" housing row, this apartment is in the heart of downtown San Francisco. However inside is where your stay in San Francisco truly becomes exceptional. This 7-room unit features elegant rooms, high ceilings with wood beams spanning across the living room, hardwood floors throughout, and wool area rugs. A wonderful mix of both modern and antique furnishings adds the perfect touch to this unit's design, as do the stained glass windows found throughout the apartment. Both bedrooms are set very far apart ensuring privacy within your party. The kitchen is complete with beautiful wood cabinets and is sunny and spacious. There is a large family style kitchen table along with a dining table for those quiet dinners at home, or you can enjoy the evening on the quaint garden patio. The unit also offers a backyard with two ancient Sequoia redwood trees. Your stay at this beautiful unit will not be forgotten!</span><br /><span>It has been said of this building that it is "one of three of the most significant architectural dwellings in San Francisco". "If San Francisco is the Rome of the colorist Movement, Alamo Square is the Vatican. The Square is the heart of the greatest collection of Painted Ladies and one of the most important collections of Victorian buildings in the world. Although it doesn't have a Saint Peter's, it does have an Archbishop Mansion."</span><br /><span>This Mansion is located a block away from the "Belle" facing Alamo Square park and just up 1/2 a block are the famous "Seven Sisters" seen in every collection of photos depicting San Francisco. 1347-45 McAllister Street was designed by James Francis Dunn, started in early 1898 and completed at the end of 1900. It was built in the French neo-Baroque style as a tribute to the owner's great love, an opera diva from Paris. He had 2 "Juliet"(as in Shakespeare's Juliet) balconies constructed that are similar to the Paris Opera House boxes even today. The front of the building has 4 winged mermaids and Grecian urns of mythological significance surrounding the 2 huge oval windows at the very top of the building, behind which is a grand ballroom with a panoramic view of downtown San Francisco all the way to Mt. Diablo across the Bay Bridge, as well as weary gods holding up the eves, and finally museum worthy stained glass sea shell windows with gems spilling out over the balconies.</span><br /><span>The entry way is a huge tortoise shell with a ruby heart above it said to be "like the piece that frames m'lady-in-waiting at the French court". The building is a feature on the Double Decker bus tourists route, as well as walking tours of S.F., and is to be found in coffee table books on San Francisco architecture, magazines, and newspaper articles. The "Belle" survived the great 1906 quake as it is built on bed rock. Look up James Francis Dunn for more photos and other unique buildings he erected in San Francisco during his career.</span>
