Beautiful Edwardian Flat Near Ghirardelli in San Francisco
2949 Larkin is a beautiful, completely remodeled, 2 bedroom, 2 bath flat in a two unit Edwardian building on Larkin near Ghirardelli Square, Aquatic Park, Fort Mason and Marina. Originally built in 1913, with many period details including crown m …
This was our first trip to San Francisco and Dede's home helped make it a wonderful vacation.
Walk down the street 2 doors to meet the bus, another block or so to the trolley stop. You can practically touch the Ghirardelli tower from the roof deck (yes, all the pictures are real). Stop at the market on the corner for unique sandwiches and anything else you may need. The included parking garage is right next door and a major convenience. Walk to the water front, restaurants, Fisherman's Wharf, and easy driving access to major roads.
The home was spotless and very well equipped including washer and dryer. Very comfy beds in both bedrooms. The two full baths sold us on this home. Dede's paintings of local scenes decorate the walls and plenty of nature light from all the windows. To be honest, here is some bus noise in the morning, so if you're a light sleeper or your body is still on East Coast time as mine was, put a little cotton in your ears. Do not skip this house because of it - you'll be missing out. The inside steps are a spiral staircase so consider your accessibility needs.
Dede meets you upon arrival by opening the parking garage, handing you the keys and gives you a thorough tour, all the way to the roof. She encourages you to contact her by phone or email with any questions or concerns and responds quickly. She had plenty of excellent restaurant and activity suggestions that greatly enhanced our stay.
If you want a fantastic location for your San Francisco vacation, this is it!
After a little difficulty finding the address (the numbers are behind the front grille) and being helped by the super helpful neighbour Tony (thank you!), we arrived at this lovely property and were greeted by the very friendly owner, Dede who showed us around. One of our party had broken her foot since we booked, and due to the spiral staircase which goes down to the bedrooms and second bathroom, it could have been difficult for her but Dede straightaway offered the very substantial sofabed as an alternative to save her going downstairs at all as there is also a bathroom on the main floor. The apartment is in a fabulous location, with a deli/grocery/liquor shop literally steps away on the corner. A small local café (Black Point) is across the road and great for snacks and coffees and for a more substantial breakfast, there's a diner in Gharardelli square which is also only a few hundred metres away. Plenty of eateries and watering holes in easy walking distance (even with a broken foot!) and great public transport with Hyde Sreet tram on the next street to get you to Union Square and loads of regular, easy-to-use buses which announce each stop and stop right on the corner of Larkin Street to get you everywhere else for under $30 a week!
Very comfortable and high spec property and nothing is too much trouble for Dede - when the flush stopped working on the toilet, we had a plumber within the hour. Highly recommended and we hope to be back some day - thanks for a great stay!
Highly recommended. Very clean and nicely remodeled. Great place and location in the city with free and secure off street parking. Can't beat the roof top deck.
We absolutely loved staying at this apartment during our recent stay in San Fran. What a beautiful home in a wonderful location with amazing views from the rooftop terrace. We spent 4 weeks travelling around California and this was our favourite stay of the trip - 3 nights wasn't long enough! This was our first time using VRBO & it was a winner! It was lovely to meet Dede who makes you feel right at home. We would highly recommend this property for anyone visiting San Francisco.
This unit is so comfy, you feel like you are at home. The owner provides the perfect mix of privacy & hospitality so you feel like you are staying with friends. Plus you are in beautiful San Fran, so you know you are on vacation. This location is wonderfully convenient! Don't miss the great deli/liquor store on the corner for fantastic food & other conveniences. Walking distance to so much. Can't say enough about the delightful owner.
It was everything we'd expected and more, really - more space than the four of us needed, really big kitchen, and fantastic location. And the downstair shower was great too. Its a great place to visit SF from, both the apartment and the location - plenty of stuff within walking distance, including Chinatown (about 15-20 minutes) and Washington Square, and of course pier 39 and the seafront.
Large comfortable condo. Spectacular rooftop terrace with view of the bay.
A wonderful place to spend some time in San Francisco with a terrific location and a kind and thoughtful host to make you feel at home. Close to everything and just the right distance from the crush of Fisherman's Wharf tourist traffic so that you can easily walk down if and when you want without feeling crowded. We could have spent the entire visit enjoying the spectacular views of the bay from the rooftop deck and sipping coffee from the coffee shop across the corner. By the way they have killer breakfast sandwiches there as well and if your into chocolate Ghirardelli is just doors away. The flat itself is comfortable, clean and nicely furnished. One note though there is a spiral staircase between the the 2 floors if you have mobility concerns. For others this is one of those spots you will feel lucky to have found.
This flat was perfect for our family of 4. The second bedroom can be made up as one queen or two twin beds so this is great for siblings that don't particularly care for close contact with each other! Beds were very comfortable. I was worried about noise since the flat is in a busy location but the windows must be well insulated - I slept like a baby. There is also parking included and a washer/dryer. It has everything you could need. Close to may sights as well as public transportation and has a roof deck with a beautiful view of the water. Both Dede and Sharon are extremely accommodating. I would definitely return and highly recommend!
This property is in a great location to Fisherman Wharf and public transportation in San Francisco. You can get into the local flair of the city at this location too. The rental has is decorated nicely too. Dede, the owner, was great for helping you find your way around and live close by if there are any issues. The view from the deck in awesome! FYI, This property has a lot of stairs which was fine by us.
This condo is in a perfect location You can walk to the wharf and catch either of the cable cars. No need to get a car if staying here. So easy to get around. We walked to close hotels to catch our tours as most of ours didn't pick up at private residences. Dede is such a pleasure and was available if we had any questions. The views from the rooftop are beautiful. Would definitely stay here again and will recommend it to any of my friends going to San Francisco.
Yet another great rental through VRBO. This 2-level apartment is fabulous and exceed our expectations. A perfect get away for two couples from Minnesota. There are numerous venues within walking distance, including Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli Square. Within 1/2 block, you can catch the city bus or walk 2+ blocks to the cable car. This is perfect place if do not want to rent a car.
The owner of this rental, Dede, is lovely and could not have been more hospitable. We highly recommend this rental.
2949 Larkin is the perfect example of why our family loves VRBO. I could go on and on about Dede and her wonderful home, but I’d simply be repeating the praise of the 32 lucky visitors who preceded me and posted their five-star comments. I agree with them all.
So, instead, I’ll offer my perspectives why properties like this one are a great choice.
Feel like a local. Having actual keys to a real door means something. Not some computerized card you carry in your wallet that inevitably stops working at some inconvenient point in time. Every time you use a real key to open a real lock on a real front door, you feel like you are coming home. You feel like a local.
Live like you do at home. Yes, it’s vacation, but there are things you do at home that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice. For me, it’s getting up early, brewing a big pot of real coffee, enjoying the morning and letting the rest of the family sleep in. I like living that way.
Live like you can’t at home. No, this isn’t a contradiction to the idea above. Instead, it’s about taking what you do and adding to it. It’s about adding activities that enhance your way of life. Sip that morning coffee on a private roof deck as wild parrots fly overhead. Venture out to grab a freshly prepared sandwich and a bottle of wine and be back “home” in 5 minutes. Things I certainly can’t do at home, but wish I could.
Enjoy cherished moments. This one is probably the most important for me. They can’t be forced and you never know when they are coming, but when you are able to feel like a local, live like you do (and can’t) at home, they just happen. A son enjoying his last sloppy bits of an ice cream cone. The gleeful laughter of the kids as they try to scare passers-by with their shadows. Or, feeling right at home spending Easter at an unfamiliar church with strangers. Cherished moments that provide wonderful snapshots of life.
I may earn loyalty points at major hotel chains when I travel for business, but when it comes to traveling with my family on vacation, using VRBO and living in a property like 2949 Larkin is so much more rewarding.
This was an excellent property that was so convenient to everything you want to do! The actual property is even nicer than the pictures show and the rooftop deck is amazing. We could not have asked for anything more and the parking garage was great. Dede was great and extremely helpful; she clearly cares about making your visit as wonderful as possible. I would recommend to anyone going to San Francisco and would love to stay there again if our vacation plans allow in the future!
Charming character home near Fisherman's Wharf. Our host Dede did everything to make our stay convenient and comfortable. The location is close to tourist attractions if you want but also a short walk to local stores and restaurants if you want to stay off the tourist path.
The kitchen and living areas are beautifully appointed and having on site parking included was a real bonus. The house was clean and bright but felt secure too.Would definitely stay here again.
Comfortable two level condo located one block from fishermans wharf and next door to famous ghirardelli square. Also Lombard street is easy walk
Dede met us on arrival and spent time going over the details of the place
excellent beds, super absorbent towels, if kids were watching TV upstairs person sleeping down stairs would not be disturbed. Great kitchen well equipped with coffee, oil and spices too
street noise is minimal between 12 midnight and 6 am, when the buses start running again
Having a garage next door was a big blessing, and the great roof top would be better utilized during summers
The unit is well decorated with some of Dede's own art work!
Also there is a pretty sunken garden that we admired every day from down stairs!
We stayed for a week at Dede's apartment and had the most enjoyable time there. First of all, Dede is a wonderful host. For example, she could not meet us on arrival but left clear instructions for us to enter and insisted that we rung her to make sure we got in all right. The apartment was tastefully decorated and had the charm of a historic building with great views from the roof terrace. It is a well equipped home and would do very comfortably for a family of up to 5. We like being next door to the chocolate and ice cream parlour for the late night desserts. We were close to the Hyde Powell Cable car line that takes you directly to Union Square. Fisherman Wharf was a little further away. Best regards, The Chays from Singapore
This apartment is an absolute dream! First of all, it's across the road from Ghirardelli Square and we used that as a landmark for coming "home" during our entire week long stay. It's so visible! We used the Muni pass and travelled on cable cars and streetcars.
The apartment was so comfortable and warm that we didn't mind staying in when the weather was wet and cold. The pictures correctly depict the place but yet it was lovelier when we saw it then. Garage parking was available next door and such a convenience! Dede was so sweet to spend time to meet us upon arrival and to spend time to let us know all the details. She even emailed me later to let us know some of her recommendations for activities for our young kids.
All in all, we loved our stay and have recommended it to friends before we even left! Would love to see San Francisco some time in summer and will definitely be staying here then.
