$145/Night Beautiful Victorian apartment in Haight-Ashbury
This historic Victorian sits on a hillside overlooking the City and Marin Headlands to the north from a large private deck. It also has views of a neighbor flower garden from the kitchen and dining area. It has a working fireplace and hardwood flo …
This rental is not to be recommended. Let me say right off that the people involved were very nice but, basically, this unit is not fit to rent. Location is good. Space is good. However.....
1) the single lightbulb greeting you on the front porch does not work. Can't see the lock at night.
2) carpet in front hall and bedroom is filthy.
3) Paint on vanity in bathroom is peeling. Fixtures in bathroom and kitchen are low end hardware store from the 50's. Loose in the kitchen.
4) there is no mattress cover!! Pillows have probably been there for quite a while.
5) It is freezing. There seems to be a heater in the bedroom which was not working for us. The nice person offered to come over to light the pilot. However, I did not want a pilot flame in the bedroom! The other method of heating consists of two very small electric heaters which you may try to put next to your feet in the living room. However, it they are both on, don't try to use the toaster nor the microwave. That results in all power going out. YOu must go outside and reset the breaker which needs to be done a couple of times as it is so loose.
We have rented quite a bit in California, France, Switzerland, Belgium. This is by a long-shot the absolute worse. It really seems that no effort at all has been made to render this unit inviting or cozy.
The location was wonderful - we loved the neighborhood. We walked to Haight-Ashbury, to Alamo Sq., to the Castro and in Buena Vista Park. We did find a parking space every night but it was not easy. One night we drove around and around for 40 min.looking for a spot. The last night we were there we got a parking ticket - not sure why! We thought the building was rundown looking and inside could have used some color. We also were quite cold - the heater worked adequately for the bedroom but not for the living room. We would not recommend this rental.
Since posting the review below, I've had several conversations with the rental agent. He has been extremely concerned and responsive about the problems I outlined in the previous review of this property. The owner will be beginning work immediately on all of the items below, and re-stocking the kitchen, etc. Based on this, I am now changing my review from a 1 to a 5 for future renters. With changes made, I believe you will find a very comfortable, quiet, and extremely convenient apartment. The location on several bus lines with very frequent service near downtown made it a great base to explore the city. The Haight Market a few blocks away is a good place for both basic groceries and prepared food, and the Magnolia Gastropub is enjoyable and affordable. Our college-age daughter thought the shopping at the Haight's boutiques and vintage shops was better than Union Street shops and other touted shopping districts. Like I said, a very responsive agent, and a very happy ending to this story!!
This apartment worked out perfectly for our week-long stay in SF (2 adults, 2 teens). The cost of the apartment was probably the same as a nice hotel downtown, but we had more space, we had a washer and dryer and we were able to fix meals here instead of eat out everyday. Two main bus lines (6 and 71) run down Haight all day and evening, so you do not need a car to get to the tourist areas or to a grocery store (Buy a 7-day Muni pass at the airport for around $30 and a bus map for $3 and you will be set!). Parking may be 'free', but having a car is a burden because there is no where to park anywhere within the city. I actually liked not having to worry about a car for the week and the public transportation is amazing in this city. Also, this apartment is walking distance from the Haight/Ashbury corner, Golden Gate park and from Alamo park where the 'painted ladies' victorian houses are. I also liked staying here because it is a couple of miles from all the mass congestion of the tourist areas and you get to see more of the neighborhoods of SF. The owner, Bernat, was always very quick to respond to my emails and we had no problems getting into the apartment when we arrived. My only complaints/"room for improvement" about the apartment would be: The bathroom sink is very slow to drain, 'linens and towels' did not include washclothes, the lock to the main gate is a little fussy, and you can easily blow a fuse if you have too many appliances on at the same time (the electrical panel is right there so you can flip the switch). Other then those few minor things, I would still choose staying here again over a hotel in a heartbeat.
Perfect location, clean and comfortable
