Leslie's Retreat: Spacious Home Walking Distance to Downtown
Gorgeous 4 bedroom home located in a historically significant area of Salem North River. Short walking to all the excitement Salem has to offer with trolly and Segway tours, Museums, Galleries, Fine Dining, Beaches and the Salem Water Ferry. …
Thank you for the great house. It was just what the family needed for our trip. Great location. Thanks.
The property is well maintained and was accurately listed. A fabulous home, Mary the owner accommodated us in every way. The huge benefit for our family was the 4 bedrooms and being able to accommodate 5-8 people different times during our long stay. We also used the basement for the extra bath which has an excellent tub/shower and laundry. It was nice having the half bath on main floor and the large refrigerator too. Gas grill outside worked great! The living room was very comfortable with seating for six and dining room for eight. The location ideal for our family reunion.
I would rate this property a 5 star if some of the mattresses were upgraded. The dining room chairs are antiques, so they need renters that are gentle on the furniture. If you rent the basement I would recommend bringing a 2'' full size foam topper for the futon, and keep in mind its a NE basement, not a lot of window light. Our Bests below:
Best breakfast: Reds
Best lobster roll: Dot and Rays (good breakfast too)
Best roast beef sandwich and onion rings: Kings (best $ value for a cheap meal)
Best fried clams: Kings and the Clambox in Ipswich
Best chocolates: Stowaway Sweets Marlehead MA- It was good enough for Roosevelt and the Queen of England, don't miss this one!
Best pizza:too many choices, but ours is Marblehead House (greek), Engine House (NY style)
Best donuts: Marty's in Ipswich-its worth the drive! Gotta get there early, when they are gone he does not make more that day.
Cheapest lobster-Market Basket! lol
Best view: Marblehead harbor at sunset on Crocker Park. Unless your an ex local like us, its hard to find and hard to park, and you need to walk, but worth the effort. Don't get a parking ticket. Get there just before sunset to hear the cannons go off from all the yacht clubs.
The time we spent at Leslie's Retreat was just like being in our own home! The house was clean and comfortable. The property manager was very helpful and friendly. As a Boston marathon participant it was nice to stay outside of the city yet enjoy a short drive in to see all that Boston has to offer. The home had everything we could possibly need and my three children loved having their own rooms!! We would definitely come back!
Our group consisted of (6) adults and (1) child.
I stumbled upon this property and we all feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to stay there. The home exceeded our expectations in every way imaginable. The house was filled with charm and much personality! We immediately felt at home upon entering. The home was spacious, very clean and well cared for. We also enjoyed spending time in the court yard. Nice quiet street.
Mary (the home owner) was pleasant and more than happy to provide us with her knowledge of the area. She immediately bonded with our granddaughter, as both were collectors of sea glass. After a day out in Salem, we came “home” to a lovely gift of a sea glass necklace and card from Mary to our granddaughter. This really warmed our hearts.
Each of us hold great memories of our visit at Leslie's Retreat and are looking forward to a return stay in the Fall. Thank you again for opening up "your" home as "our" home!
A group of 5 of us recently stayed at this wonderful house. It was even nicer than the pictures depict. Very comfortable, with everything we needed for our four day stay. It was within walking distance of downtown with a corner store conveniently located just down the street. The owner gave us a tour and offered helpful information (including leaving a binder with directions to attractions and shopping and numerous brochures and take out menus!).
The owner even decorated for Halloween which was a very much appreciated and set the tone for a fun-filled weekend.
I would not hesitate to recommend this rental property, it was perfect.
We are a family of 6 (all adults) who stayed for a 3 day weekend. We are very familiar with Salem, and have stayed at other rental properties. This one is first rate. The home is charming and immaculate, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Everything as advertized.Mary communicated with us before arrival and met us there at check-in time with all the information we needed. The location is very convenient to downtown, in an area with not so much traffic. Try Leslie's Retreat anytime, or Dotty and Rays for breakfast- we ate at both and liked the food.We also tried King's Roast Beef Subs ,to go- also on North St- fantastic. I would definitely stay at this rental again.
Excellent stay! The home was warm and welcoming! 5 woman together for Haunted Happenings inSalem and we all walked in feeling like the house hugged us. The owner Mary was congenial and a veritable font of information. She had decorated throughout the home in wonderful Fall colors and Halloween theme. I have already requested a week next October! So worth the money! We had our own bedrooms a full kitchen dining room , living room and small back yard. With in walking distance of downtown, close to the T line. Just a great experience!
Leslie's Retreat is a spacious comfortable house that is very clean and well-maintained. The space is great for a family and/or friends. The kitchen is well-equipped with cookwear, dishes and utensils. The beds/bedrooms are especially comfortable and restful. The owner was very helpful and made arrangements for our requested late check-in. I would definitely stay at Leslie's Retreat again, and also would recomment it to friends and relatives.
Great place to rest your head, or simply relax after a long day of work or play in the local area. The owner makes the stay even better with her welcoming personality. The interior is very clean and tidy with evey amenity you might need for a short or long stay in Salem. Highly recommend spending some time here.... be sure to stop by Leslie's Retreat restaurant as well for another nice visit and a hearty breakfast.
This is a perfect house for a family to vacation in! It's clean, comfortable, safe, had every ammenity... close to downtown Salem, great parking, easy to get to, comfy beds, washer and dryer, DVR - all the things you wish a hotel would have, but doesn't. I'm a first time VRBO user - I'm so glad a friend recommended that I check this website. We had the vacation of a lifetime and I attribute part of that to having such an awesome place to stay. Thank you Mary! Will recommend to friends traveling in the area.
Great home! Full of charm, very comfortable, and had everything we could need. It is located on a very quiet street and is an easy walk to downtown (no more than 10 minutes). The owner is very friendly, helpful and attentive. She has a book full of activities and directions to everything you could possibly want to do. The owner even provided a dog bed to ensure our dog was comfortable! I would definitely stay again.
My family and MIL stayed at Leslie's Retreat in June 2012-we were pleasantly surprised to find such a spacious home. My family is mostly adult and it was nice to have our own space but we mostly gathered in the kitchen area. All of the necessary items were provided for the kitchen, bath and laundry unlike the home we had in Manhattan. I would highly recommend it for both adult groups or families with children. It was quiet with parks and amenities within walking distance and incredibly comfortable to return to after a long day. Unfortunately, we didn't really get a chance to visit some of Salem sights but hope to return in the future. The restaurants in the area were great-several had gluten-free menus as well. We took the ferry to Boston and returned by train. If we had it to do over we would have taken the train both ways.
