This rental was just lovely - really a charming little spot. It is beautifully decorated and well-furnished, including the kitchen. It is a short drive to everything we wanted to see and do in the Twin Cities and the off-street parking is a perk. The owner went out of her way to make sure we had a good stay, and we especially appreciated the small gifts of warm socks and lotions in the basket on the table. We were very comfortable there and we would stay there again in a heartbeat.
A lovely and cozy vacation cottage for our family. Judy, the owner, is both thoughtful and responsive, making our visit easy to arrange and manage from start to finish. The house is immaculate and full of nice touches like thick, fluffy towels, kitchen staples and spices, and a fat binder full of information on local restaurants and recreation options. Location is convenient for St. Paul and Minneapolis outings; also offers access to a terrific walking/ running trail around the lake.
The Charming Getaway met and exceeded the expectations of our entire family-- mom, dad and three children. The grounds were idyllic and beautifully maintained, the home was absolutely clean and beautifully and tastefully decorated, and the well-appointed kitchen made all of our meals easy to prepare and enjoy. Since we arrived in the middle of summer and stayed for the entire month of July, we were extremely happy to be able to sleep, relax and dine in air-conditioned comfort. The house stayed perfectly cool, and when the weather outside cooled down, we enjoyed delightful breezes coming off the lake. We especially remember the evenings spent on the beautiful deck that was easily accessed from the living room. We loved roasting marshmallows in the fire pit and had a wonderful time participating in many of the family-oriented activities offered at Lake Phalen: the dragon boat races, the Asian cultural festival, and of course daily swimming. We did not get around to renting a canoe or a paddle-boat but will be certain to do that next year. It was a wonderful vacation, and I highly recommend this lake-surrounded getaway for short or extended stays in the metropolitan area.
Everything a person needed was supplied with such detail in the cottage. The kitchen was stocked with spices, flour, sugars, grains. Robes that were so soft were on the beds. Fluffy towels, down comforters, beautiful wood floors. Spectacular gardens surround the property, a huge apple tree that we made apple pie with. Lake Phalen a block away with a beach where we rented paddle boats and paddle boards. Bicycles in the garage. B.B.Q on the huge deck. Sounds like summer in heaven. Very clean, fun and artsy.
The only drawback for our stay was having the 4 grandchildren in such a small space. Judith has wonderful antiques and with smaller children I got a little nervous about anything breaking. The kids loved the huge yard where we pitched a tent and told ghost stories out under the stars.
What a fantastic little house, close to everything in the Twin cities yet in a quiet little neighborhood. The hose was a great vacation getaway for myself, Janice & her two daughters. We couldn't have asked for anything more in a vacation home(well except for maybe a beach!). Judy was very helpful answering any questions we might have & has a wonderful house we hope to visit again. The only downside was it wasn't available for the last two days of our trip. Thank Judy for such a great little place to stay! We look forward to coming again.
We enjoyed our stay in this comfortable, Immaculate and well equipped sweet cottage. The kitchen was stocked with extra ingredients and supplies. A great space, loved the 'sleeping' porch. It was cozy and having the radio in place and the comfortable chairs made it a great spot in the evenings.
Lots of wildlife and a beautiful private yard. Also appreciated having bicycles on hand. Such a great area to explore...
Thanks so much.
A guest sent me a lovely email after her stay. This is an excerpt from that email:
First of all, we must comment on what a thoroughly charming and delightful home you have! We absolutely LOVE IT and we're so glad we booked for 2 weeks! Also, we so appreciate all the little extras and details you've thought of - including the wine and welcome card - THANK YOU SO MUCH!! You are a most gracious and thoughtful hostess!
Your home is so peaceful and has such a dream-like, mystical quality to it
. . . and the artwork! The beauty and the creativity, the use of color,
shape, nostalgia - the home has the quality of pulling you in to another
This house was just right for us, from the time we arrived to a spotless clean house and were met with a nice little gift basket, until we left. We thoroughly enjoyed the house and its quiet location, and when the weather was not cooperating for outdoor activities it was a delightful place to relax and read in cozy comfort. Everything we needed was provided, even the little things many hosts would not have thought of. Our host went out of her way to be sure that everything was just right, and, when there was a small computer problem, she immediately took care of it. The location is very accessible from major roads and handy to all parts of the twin cities metro area. There are lots of good eating places nearby, and good places for grocery shopping, and a good mall too, if you need one. The bikes she provided were a nice extra, and we enjoyed a ride around nearby Lake Phalen. We would definitely stay there on a future trip to St. Paul.
My husband and I stayed at Judy's rental over a very chilly winter weekend in March! It was close to everything-- thrift shops, groceries, movies, and MOA of course-- but the location was removed from the bustle. I loved how the house set back from the road, and we enjoyed taking our dog around the lake in the afternoons. The atmosphere was perfect for recording music, as my husband did, and for scrapbooking which I was able to enjoy. We also loved the kitchen! Judy has thought of everything by providing organic cooking materials and spices, appliances, blankets and robes, and she even left a sweet card and homemade soap and jelly for us upon our arrival. The bed was comfortable and the house very cozy. The only thing I think could be improved is if some of the furniture was taken out-- we stayed in a lot of our 3-day vacation in this home, and there were a lot of side tables that we ended up shuffling around so that we could move around better.
Overall, a great time and a huge thank you to Judy for going out of her way to get a bag of sweatshirts to us which we had left in a closet by mistake! My husband and I rarely have time to take a vacation, but this was a welcome retreat and we would certainly come back.
My daughters and I had a lovely stay at Judith's lovely rental house. The house was well maintained and cozy. There was several lakes and trails close by for walking and hiking. I would love to have stayed in this house in late spring or summer and take advantage of the bicycles for a spin around the area. The home was well decorated with eclectic antiques and collectibles. We were not far away from most all of the twin cities attractions so we got to experience all the area had to offer. We had a very relaxing stay.
The space was comfortable for three people. The service - snow shoveling - was fantastic. Tim did a great job. Close to Lake Phalen and great walking trail around it. Would rent it again in a heartbeat if needed while we are in the Twin Cities. All kinds of appliances and accessories you'll ever need. Well furnished.
Rates were very reasonable for location and access to all parts of St Paul and Minneapolis.
I really enjoyed my stay. Everything I needed was provided and the house was so awesome and cool it made me feel like it was actually winter outside. Wait a sec. It was winter outside!! But the house was awesome anyway. I especially loved the duvet on my bed. It was soooooo toasty and comfy I decided to get one myself when I got back home :) And I loved the bird feeders just outside the front door and the icicles hanging from the eaves. It was like the picture perfect place in a winter wonderland :)
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Judy's cozy home and lovely surrounding! We began each morning watching a beautiful array of birds at the bird feeder -- and wild turkeys, squirrels and rabbits on the lawn. Each day included a long walk on one of the many beautiful trails -- MN State trail, Lake Phalen, Bruce Vento Trial -- that are just steps away from the house. Often we'd walk down to Lake Phalen in the evening to see the moon and stars reflected in the lake. We stayed from summer through early autumn and loved watching the foliage change to the magnificent colors of Fall.
Although the home is in a more rural setting, the location is very convenient to the urban attractions of downtown St. Paul -- the best of both worlds!
We had a wonderful time and will certainly stay at Judy's place whenever we visit St. Paul. We consider it our "home away from home" in Minnesota!
A guest, upon checkout, left behind a wonderful note which read:
Thank you for the warm and cozy cottage "doll" house. I've enjoyed my stay immensely. Your hospitality and desire to make each day fulfilling and filled with contentedness showed in your quick response to my needs and were so appreciated. I will be back! I can see your brightness and intelligence thru your design. Thank you again.
