      Architect-designed
A three and a half storey house set in 1000 year old native trees in the scenic hill country of the northern Manawatu District. Designed in the 1970s, with brick and wood floors, a central spiral staircase, and a tiled conservatory, the Retreat is ideal as a honeymoon destination, or a quirky get-away-from-it-all holiday house for a group of friends. With a queen bedroom, a double bedroom, and 2 single beds up a vertical ladder, the open plan design is not user-friendly for young children or the very old.
The location is very private, but it is only a short walk past the pond and across the croquet lawn to enjoy a breakfast or dinner at the Homestead, should you feel like a change from catering for yourselves.
The Retreat is 3 hours from Rotorua or Wellington, an ideal mid-way stop, and is on a scenic through route off State Highway 1. Mairenui Rural Retreat, of which the Retreat is one part of the complex, is a farmstay and fishing retreat close to one of the best flyfishing rivers in New Zealand, the Rangitikei River. Fishing guides are available on reservation. The small river flowing through the property is ideal for swimming.

Mairenui Rural Retreat is a destination for all seasons!

Century old bungalow, the Colonial Villa
Large self-catering homestead set in spacious grounds, with rambling roses, rhododendrons and camellias. A perfect place for family gatherings or groups of friends, very child-friendly. A verandah on 2 sides, great for relaxing in the sun or watching a strenuous game of croquet. If the weather is miserable there's no need for you to feel down, with 2 open fires in the house, as well as a woodburning stove in the kitchen. Shelves full of books, magazines, and board games to while away the hours. Even a snooker table in the large livingroom!

A newly-built ensuite bathroom has ensured adequate bathroom facilities, along with the separate bathroom & shower room. There are many of the original touches left in the homestead, as well as more modern facilities.

Situated on a scenic through route from State Highway One to Palmerston North, Mairenui Rural Retreat is only 3 hours from Rotorua or Wellington. As well as the croquet lawn, there is also a petanque (boules) court on site, and a tennis court at the Homestead. As Mairenui is a working farm, there are many farm animals - sheep, cattle, deer (both wild & farmed) and a sport horse stud owned by Matt & Leonie. A river runs through the property, with attractive swimming holes, and there are beautiful walks to take on the farm.

Mairenui is a farmstay as well as a fishing retreat, with access to professional guides. Gourmet meals can be provided at the Homestead (you only need to cross the road) and Sue, David, Matt & Leonie delight in welcoming guests of all nationalities (French & German are spoken).
