About the home:
Chance upon the eclectic melting pot of multiculturalism, aristocratic heritage and alternative culture that is Notting Hill and you’ll find vintage trinkets and old-school threads galore at the world famous Portobello Road market. Sample one of the many excellent local Caribbean restaurants nearby, or simply play the flaneur and wander the film-set streets. On a mansion-lined street called Kensington Park Road, an equally eclectic one bedroom, two bathroom home lays its head. Step inside to grab a cold beer from the lime green Smeg fridge, and sip it slowly on the patio, listening to the bustle of Notting Hill go by.
Portrait of the artist
Your host moved over from Sweden as a teenager, and she loved London so much she never left. As an interior designer, she has poured her aesthetic passions into her Notting Hill home. The space is a Scandanavian canvas replete with the funky and functional trappings of her life in the metropolis.
Devil’s in the details
Breeze inside this one bedroom, two bathroom abode and you’ll be instantly aware that a designer’s been at work here. Pour a coffee into a quirky tea set and explore the open plan living and dining area, where accents of lemon and red are ripe against the muted white walls. Curl up in a vintage leather armchair, and admire the sitting area’s fifties furniture and retro artwork, or relax around the timber dining table, where five, unique chairs make social dining a cinch. A snug corner next to the window provides further armchairs for lounging, or enjoying a book from the well-stocked bookshelf. Over in the high-end kitchen, find function and design warped with antique spoon drawer handles and decorative wall tiles.
Top up your coffee before touring through to the master bedroom, where light wood flooring and an angular king-sized bed tell tales of Scandinavian log cabins. Here, relax on the crisp, white sheets, or on the spacious chaise longue, and admire the room’s array of atmospheric lamps. Or, make use of the master ensuite’s roll top, brass-tapped bath and ‘his and hers’ basins. You’ll also find a second shower room, where a citron hand basin and a heated towel rack reflect the playful yet upscale vibe of the rest of the space.
A fine part
In the black and white days of the 1820s, the Ladbroke family began extending their estate, and since then this movie star’s playground has grown into one of London’s most fashionable and cosmopolitan areas. Enjoy its upmarket boutiques, restaurants and labyrinthine market. You can take a jaunt towards Kensington Gardens, or, for the centre of the city, Oxford Circus is 15 minutes away via Notting Hill Gate tube.
