    Apartment in Lisbon 126 - Alfama - managed by travelingtolisbon

    Lisbon

    Description

    Do you remember that famous movie where someone said that the last floor is always the best? Well this is the case of flat 126. It is located on the 4th floor (no elevator) of a building at Alfama, one of the most typical neighborhoods of Lisbon.
    Very luminous and breathtaking views are the keywords to describe this two bedroom cozy apartment.
    Just in front of the apartment you will find the Fado Museum. It is also a short walking distance from the other picturesque neighbourhoods of Baixa and Chiado. Nearby you have all kinds of traditional commerce.
    It is also 5 minutes walking distance to the subway and international train station of Santa Apolónia.
    The apartment has 75 m2 and it has been recently renovated to include the following:
    *
    one bedroom with a double bed (160 cm * 200 cm);
    *
    one bedroom with one single bed (80 cm * 185 cm) and one single sofa bed (80 cm * 190 cm);
    *
    a living room with dining and sitting areas, one double sofa bed (140 cm * 190 cm), Tv (Portuguese channels only), DVD player and Hi-Fi;
    *
    a complete kitchen with gas stove and oven, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment and a washing machine;
    *
    a complete bathroom with bathtub.
    In wintertime the apartment is heated with electric heaters.
    UMTS internet connection with USB plug can be provided upon request (10,00€/day).
    We will welcome you with a bottle of wine.
    There are several apartments in Alfama, the neighborhood of apartment 126. It is the medieval Moorish neighborhood where an emerging cosmopolitanism mixes with the “natives” day-to-day life. It is a village in the heart of the city, due to the fact that most of Alfama’s residents have lived here their entire lives and retain a strong sense of community.
    Alfama was first settled by the Romans and Visigoths and was an important Jewish neighborhood in the 15th century, but it was the Moors who gave the district its atmosphere and name (al hamma means springs, a reference to the hot springs used as baths until the 17th century). It is crowned by São Jorge castle, which was built by the Visigoths in the 5th century and enlarged by the Moors in the 9th century.
    Be surprised by Alfama's narrow cobblestone alleyways, stairs and squares, built on a rock-hill that was responsible for its survival after the big 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of the medieval city. A walk through this old-fashioned residential neighborhood is now a step back in time.
    It is an ideal place to explore hidden places, stunning views over the city, the river Tejo, restaurants, fado houses, or even to dance and eat sardines during the popular June festivals. Here you can find numerous little grocery shops, taverns and small restaurants — most having no more than 3 tables. At the edge of the Alfama, Lisbon's renowned flea market, the Feira da Ladra, is held in the Campo de Santa Clara every Tuesday and Saturday.
    Contrasting with these timeless images is a trendy modern development by the waterfront across from Santa Apolónia train station which houses stylish design shops, restaurants and bars, like the famous "Lux".
    You are also very close to theFado and Portuguese guitar Museum: Situated at Largo do Chafariz de Dentro. It is a place where you can have a historical visit through the most traditional Portuguese music -Fado- and famous Portuguese fado singers like Amalia Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo and Mariza. During the summer (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) you can dinner in a small square of the museum and listen to Fado, live! A night program you certainly won’t miss!
    Another astonishing building next door to the apartment isCasa dos Bicos (House of Facets). It was built in 1523 at the time of king Manuel I and is faced with diamond-shaped stones, probalby influenced by the Italian renaissance.
    If you decide to go further up, passing Alfama you will find an astonishing view of the city from Miradouro da Graça or from the one where is the church of St. Maria do Monte da Graça. You will also be able to visit a Spanish barroque style monastery S. Vicente de Fora (mark of the Spanish domination of Portugal until 1640).
    From this apartment you can explore the rest of the city walking to the castle (S. Jorge) or to Baixa, Bairro Alto, Chiado or Santa Clara.

      Apartment 10 is located in the district of Pena. Number 10 is located on a pedestrian street built over cobblestone stairs, one of the characteristics of Lisbon’s historic districts. There are several other apartments at Baixa.
      The main feature of Pena is that it is a plateau, from which two main slopes descend, facing Martin Moniz and Avenida da Liberdade.
      It begins at the north-east of Rossio and extends to Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, commonly known by Campo de Santana. The streets on the two slopes are twisting and irregular, leading to many beautiful alleys and side streets.
      Being one of the oldest districts in Lisbon, one is overwhelmed by the diversity of its buildings, constructed in accordance with the successive types of architecture through centuries. Wrought iron balconies from the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries can be seen everywhere. In constant dialogue with the wrought iron are the glazed tiles of the façades - a style reportedly brought from Brazil after the 16th century.
      Pena is a quiet neighborhood where one can find the Italian and German embassies, the birthplace of Amália Rodrigues and the place where Luis de Camões is supposed to have lived his last days (Calçada de Santana, nº 139).
      It is very close to the famous Bairro Alto, a nightlife area, which can be reached by walking down Rossio or by taking the Elevator do Lavra, the oldest funicular in Lisbon. This 120 year old elevator goes every 15 minutes down to Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, the location of many excellent fish restaurants as recommended by many city guides (see VisitLisboa).
