HISTORICAL ISTANBUL, TOPKAPI PALACE, BLUE MOSQUE, AYASOPHIA, SEA, 2 TOP TERRACES
`Unique' spot in the heart of the old town of Istanbul: Semaphore house (80 m², 2 double bedrooms, 1 single sofa-bed, 2 lounges, a large kitchen, 1 bathroom, separated WC, 2 terraces). This very refined and bright house is nestled beneath the fort …
We had a great time in Pascal's apartment. The location was great, an enjoyable short stroll to the heart of the old city. The street of the apartment is typical Istanbul, with smart houses or hotels interspersed with derelict places. However, we all felt very safe at all times. Just up the road is a small shop with all the basics, including fresh bread for the mornings. The apartment is on the second floor, so it's a bit of a lug upstairs if you've got heavy bags. We found the apartment itself perfect for the four of us. Two lovely rooms with double beds and a huge lounge and dining area with a kitchen at the end. As the apartment takes up all the top floor there are two balconies, one at each end. The views maybe aren't picture postcard but they are certainly photogenic in their own right. The beds were comfy, the kitchen was really well kitted out and we didn't need anything other than what was provided. As we went in winter we were also really pleased that the heating kept us nice and toasty and so we didn't need to use the air con units. All in all we would really recommend Pascal's place. There would be only two things we would change. Firstly it would be helpful to have some fuller welcome information about the flat, or even a guest book for people to leave tips on local places, restaurants etc. Secondly the only way of paying seems to force the payer to have to pay extra bank charges, expensive and more so if you pay a deposit and balance. I think there are other ways that could be better for guests. Despite this we had a great time and would whole heartedly recommend this to others.
Apartment is superbly located in Sultanahmet about a five minute walk from the Aya Sofia and the Blue Mosque.
Spacious with a balcony at the front and rooftop garden at the rear. Well fitted out kitchen, but there are only a couple of very small corner shops in the area so hard to buy food to cook at home so we always ate out.
Toilet/bathroom was a bit smelly but I suspect this was more down to ancient building plumbing than anything with the apartment itself. Note that the apartment is accessed by two sequential flights of very steep stairs, so would not be ideal if you were mobility restricted in any way. These niggles aside, I would recommend it, and would definitely go back.
A good location in Sultanahmet in very easy walking distance from The Blue Mosque and Aya Sophia. Far enough from the traffic to be quite peaceful. Nice balconies to sit out on and efficient air-conditioning.
The proximity to the local train line means that one can get to and from Sirkeci without having to climb up to the tram.
The beds are very comfortable and the kitchen is well-equipped, although we didn't really use it as food is Istanbul is excellent and reasonably priced.
Having a washing machine in the flat was very handy as Istanbul can get very hot and it was good to be able to keep clothes fresh.
Some of the wiring in the flat seemed a little "interesting", but everything worked.
I would certainly consider using the flat again.
We rented this apartment for two weeks and it definitely contributed to our wonderful stay in Istanbul. The location is fantastic. It is by many of the major tourist sites and has perfect access to various public transportation options. There are numerous restaurants and stores within a few minutes’ walk.
The bedrooms are large (with very comfortable beds) and the kitchen is a bright, warm room with everything to make a feast. There are plenty of new linens to stock a family. The porches offer fantastic views of the city.
We woke each morning to our daughter feeding the neighborhood cats on the back porch with the Blue Mosque towering above her. We took rest breaks each afternoon, enjoying a glass of wine while gazing at the boat traffic.
We have rented several homes in Europe and this was by far the nicest. I highly recommend Pascal’s apartment and suggest you book quickly. There are very few other options in Istanbul that are this perfect in this price range.
We had a pleasant stay at this apartment … Large rooms, very clean and comfortable. The terraces are quiet beautiful. Istanbul is amazing and we looking forward to come back.
I stayed for 9 nights with my 18 year old son - we are both getting too old to share a small hotel room and he was glad of the 3 doors between the two bedrooms to drown out my alleged snoring!
The flat is much larger than shown on the details - 2 large double bedrooms with very comfy beds and efficient air con, lovely large living area, kitchen and both balconies are the full width of the flat.
10 minutes walk up to all the attractions around Hagia Sofia and Blue Mosque, even more buzzing after dark as we stayed during Ramadan. Tram stop allows access to the other attractions over the Golden Horn and trips are very cheap - even cheaper when I realised that the orange tag on the flat keyring is an "AKBIL" - token which you can fill up for the trams and ferries reducing the price even further (soon to be replaced by card only system though).
Lots of restaurants nearby to suit all budgets and an interesting area with a mix of boutique hotels and local family housing. Very friendly lads at the shop nearby, who chatted every time we went past.
Flat is ideal to rest and cool down after a day of sightseeing before heading out to eat. Balconies have shade and full sun depending on your mood.
We had a minor problem with a light switch. When I told Pascal, he had it replaced the same day. This was on a Sunday - what chance of that happening in the UK?
Would stay here again if I have a trip back in the future.

My husband and I stayed here for 10 days in May 2011 & would thoroughly recommend this apartment. It is in a very good location within a short walk of all the major tourist attractions, with a big choice of restaurants nearby. We had many memorable meals out & all the people we met or came into contact with were friendly & helpful. Its location in a residential area made us feel less like tourists and gave us a glimpse of the everyday life of the city. The apartment was very clean, spacious and comfortably furnished, with large comfortable beds. The kitchen is very well equipped too. Having a choice of terraces was great, listening to the sound of people going about their everyday lives sitting on the front terrace, and the rear terrace a very peaceful place to relax. The only minor negatives regarding the apartment were that the furniture on the rear terrace has definitely seen better days and is probably due for replacement, and there was a bit of an unpleasant whiff coming from the bathroom on occasions!
We spent the weekend at the Istanbul Grand Prix, which was very good value compared with other GPs in Europe, and despite the circuit being near Sabiha Gokcen airport, it was very easy and cheap to get to with ample buses laid on from several locations in the city. Highly recommended if you're a fan.
The owner Pascal was very helpful and knowledgeable and gave us lots of useful information. There are several guide books and lots of tourist information/maps in the apartment which we made good use of.
Istanbul is a fascinating city and we spent most of our time there just wandering around. Around every corner there is something interesting, ancient or unusual to see. A lot of the restaurants and bars have roof terraces with fabulous views over the sea and the major sights of the city - a great way of passing an hour or two. We also took the ferry up the Bosphorus which goes almost as far as the Black Sea. This was a great way of getting a different perspective on the city.
I have to agree with a previous reviewer that there should be another way of paying for the rental of this apartment, as transferring the money cost us £50 in fees, which is excessive on top of the cost of the apartment. Obviously it would have been better value if four of us had been staying here.
The minor gripes did not in any way detract from the pleasure of staying here. All in all this was a great place to stay and I would not hesitate to recommend it.
Very good location next to multiple attractions. Made our day trips with our one year old baby very easy. The apartment is very roomy, the internet is lightning fast, and the kitchen is well equipped, making the stay very, very easy.
The few things that need to be corrected are very important to us, and this is why we gave the average rating. If the owner corrected, or we didn't mind these things, we would give this apartment an excellent rating.
1st- There needs to be another payment method for this property. The only way to pay is by bank transfer. Since we don't live where the owners bank is (venice, italy) we had to pay $50 just to transfer the funds.
2nd- When we arrived in the apartment, it appeared that the beds had not been made. When the sheets and top cover are tossed about, we assume that they have not been made.
3rd- The bathroom had an entire load of dirty towels on the floor and the trash had not been taken out.
4th- The most important. At random times each day (2pm & 8pm) a lady would bang on the door and then walk straight in like she owned the place. We could not communicate with here since we don't speak the language. It startled us to have someone walk into the home especially while our baby was sleeping. If there had been some communication (no instructions or note or email) detailing that we should expect a random lady to walk into the rental at any time, we could have expected it. Nothing of the sort was given.
Let me restate that this was a beautiful place in a great location. It just seems that the owner needs to communicate to everybody that has keys to not walk into the rental when its being used. The linens and the stranger walking in did not add up to the amount charged for this rental. When paying this much you expect cleanliness and security, all of which you can get from the dozen or so hotels within 300 yards.
In short, it was a little stressful to stay here. Although, it gives a sense of being at home, we would stay at a nearby hotel on our next visit.
