About the home:
Tales of the unexpected
There’s an atmosphere of mischief to Hartland Road, a sensation of living in the moment, all stuffiness tossed to one side. No boring brickwork here, this home is resplendent with colour, mingling retro and contemporary furniture with ornaments from across the world. A treasure trove of gold tiles, copper lights and jewel-hued art, you’ll feel your pulse quicken the moment you step through the door. And Camden’s equally entertaining, its streets a heady mish mash of markets, bars and boutiques, united by some stunning London architecture. You’re close to Regent’s Park and the zoo, and to the refined lanes of Primrose Hill. Live it large or chill down – the choice is entirely yours.
Your hosts spent a number of years living in India, and you’ll spot art and souvenirs from that time dotted all around their home. Once they were academics, now they’re in consulting, but as their library will testify, they continue to be avid readers.
All kinds of everything
This house is full of surprises: the look is urban eccentricity. The sitting room holds quirky furniture and exciting art above an original fireplace and floorboards. The shelves are filled with books and exotic ornaments, and the lighting’s wonderfully witty. Next door, the high spec eat-in kitchen’s brand new, with every appliance a budding chef would wish for, there’s also a wall of tropical fish. Eat beneath burnished pendant lamps at the dining table, or out in the contemporary paved garden, enjoying the last rays of sunshine.
There’s more outside space upstairs in the form of a chic roof terrace, alongside two airy double bedrooms. Both are filled with books, art and warm wood, and, like the family bathroom, they’ve just the right combination of avant-garde and tradition.
Day and night
Camden High Street’s a bustling parade of market stalls, vintage clothing emporia and busy cafes. For a bit more peace and quiet, walk to Regent’s Park, or visit Primrose Hill, a beautiful corner of town dearly beloved by London’s A listers. Take a trip to the zoo, and when darkness falls stay up way past your bedtime in Camden’s wildest pubs. Or, head for the West End, the tube from Camden Town to Leicester Square takes less than ten minutes.
