Charming Bay View 'Tree- House' Cottage in Berkeley Hills
Detached newly refurbished cottage overlooking a tranquil terraced garden with upstairs and downstairs views of the San Francisco Bay. Private visitor gated entrance.
RATED AS BERKELEY'S SAFEST NEIGHBORHOOD -see: neighborhoodscout.com/ca/berkele …
My husband and I stayed here while doing some business and personal travel in the area. It made a great launching pad for our little adventures in the Bay area and the owner's met us upon or late evening arrival and were very kind and helpful. The cottage had a lot of nice little touches that made it very comfortable. The property was very much as described, it was very clean, and there were a lot of great places to eat in the area. And views were excellent!
As others have said, the only real issue is the very steep staircase to the loft bedroom. It did not impede our stay in any way, but be sure you feel comfortable navigating a steep staircase before booking.
The location was fabulous, so near Tilden Park where I walked with my dogs every day and I could also walk about 20 minutes to "downtown" North Berkeley. The cottage was charming although because my dogs refused to go up the stairs after an initial curious peek, I didn't spend any time there and the rest of the cottage felt quite small. Staying there for a month might have exaggerated the coziness, if I was there just for a few days or a week, maybe not. When it was sunny and warm I hung out in the lovely garden area where the dogs were more than welcome. My hosts were fabulous, anytime I needed anything it was right there. Susan was very friendly and warm and loved my dogs and even checked in on them a few times when I was away. The first week she took us for a walk to a certain part of Tilden, a great little dog walk that I would not have known about otherwise. All in all I was totally satisfied and would recommend this place highly.
The cottage is in an excellent location for UC Berkeley, shopping on Solano and the Gourmet Ghetto, the Berkeley Rose Garden, and Tilden Park. The listing description was informative and accurate, and the cottage was in excellent condition with new furnishings and kitchen utensils (even an electric kettle) for a comfortable stay. We were able to cook on the electric burners provided, and also had the use of a microwave oven. The internet connection was excellent (password provided).
Susan and Jim were very friendly and helpful, and answered all of our questions before we booked the property; in addition, they greeted us when we arrived and provided information about parking (off-street parking in their driveway) and the cottage. For those without a car there is a bus nearby connecting to downtown Berkeley.
The only caveat is that the bedroom is up a very steep staircase which requires sure-footedness, and it is easy to bump ones' head on the sloping roof (and to trip over a beam set in the floor at the end of the bed). There is a view of the bay from one window, a view of the large garden from the other, and several skylights lending a light and airy feel to the room.
We were very pleased with the cottage and found it far superior to a hotel room; we look forward to staying again next time we travel to Berkeley.
Charming space, nicely appointed, clean and well maintained. Very nice outdoor space. Owners are kind, friendly and helpful. We would recommend this property to a friend or relative--or anyone visiting Berkeley.
I would definitely recommend this cottage based on our recent 10-day stay there. It was clean, met the description, and the price was very reasonable. On top of that, Susan allowed us to bring our large dog, (whom we kept in a kennel inside the cottage at night) which was important to our decision to stay there.
We enjoyed our stay in this comfy A-framed cottage. The loft bedroom was very cozy, but requires climbing ladder type stairs and the bathroom is on the ground floor. There is no stove/oven. The garden area is very nice and has benches, chairs and table. The neighborhood was great for walking our dog. It is in the Berkeley hills and the views of the bay and sunsets are great. Note:The AT&T U-Verse worked great for TV and Internet.
A cozy place to stay. We were there less than a week and enjoyed meeting and visiting with owners Susan and Jim, warm and genuine people. They have created a magical tree house, really, to stay in. Look upon the stairway as a ladder to the the cozy loft. Go up and back down it facing the same direction as you would with a ladder. There isn't an oven but there are a good, considerate supply of counter appliances to cook light meals. We enjoyed fresh tomatoes off the vine. Didn't even need salt! Also Susan and Jim saved the last two apples from their tree for us. So good.
I rate this stay as "fair" because we found the upstairs area difficult to navigate. The stairs were very steep, more like a ladder than stairs. Secondly, I am a little over five feet tall but still could not stand up next to the bed. Finally, there is a kind of beam in the floor, about four inches wide and four inches high, that must be stepped over on the way to the bed. Needless to say, the bath room is downstairs, not easy to reach in the night.
The furnishings and kitchen were of excellent quality and the apt was sparkling clean.
There is a view of the Bay from the neighborhood, but I don't know where the view from the apartment could be. Beautiful area of Berkeley.
The Cottage was charming and perfect for a couple visiting the East Bay. The location is excellent in the beautiful Berkeley Hills and Susan couldn't be nicer. We had every thing we needed and loved the beautiful grounds around the cottage.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this property. The listing was accurate regarding the location of the property. It is convenient to public transportation and also allows for some wonderful walks in Berkeley. The listing also accurately reflected the appearance and amenities of the property, and we enjoed the well- maintained and spotless appearance of the property. We found the owners to be very helpful in directing us to local activities and restaurants that we might enjoy. They provided guides to local attractions and restaurants, and a book detailing specifc walks that wind through the city. We recommend visiting the Cheese Board Pizza restaurant which has a good selection of foods and jazz at noon, Philz Coffee, and the original Peet's Coffee in Berkeley. We also enjoyed visiting the Rose Gardent in Berkeley, and Tilden Park. We would definitely recommend this property to friends or relatives.
Property, location, ammenities, and owners (lived in house in front of cottage) were all excellent. Those who would have a problem with STEEP stairs (almost a ladder) should look at this issue before renting.
My wife and I had a wonderful stay at the 'Tree House' cottage. We were in Berkeley visiting our son and grandson. The cottage was in close proximity to where they lived and was much cheaper than having to stay at a local hotel. I must admit we didn't spend much time there, usually having breakfast and then off to that day's activities and not returning till evening. We absolutely loved the bed which is up in the attic and has 3 skylights over it. You really can't go wrong staying here. Jim and Susan have provided just about any amenity you would need and they've provided a cozy comfortable living space. We certainly will be returning here the next time we visit Berkeley.
We had a great week at the "Tree House!" This cottage is in a lovely area of Berkeley - such a pretty view of the Bay. The house has everything you need for a comfortable stay.
This was the perfect spot for me. Neat, clean, convenient private, and with a beautiful adjoining garden just beginning to bloom, I found it a great place to call my temporary home while visiting my old haunts.
Susan is a wonderful host and a very lovely lady who makes you feel at home and is very helpful. The cottage is lovely, quaint and located inside a cute, tranquil garden. The location is idyllic with great views and near Tilden Park. A car is definitely needed though to get around unless you're familiar with the Bart system.
All in all a lovely, tranquil location inside a unique property.
The cottage is located behind the owner's home with a separate entrance through a side gate. The cottage itself is well equipped with the basics, quiet, and very clean. The home is in a lovely neighborhood and we enjoyed going for walks with the baby and our dog in the evenings. Susan and her husband are very hospitable and did not hesitate to help us with questions and concerns during our stay. It was our first trip with our 9 month old daughter and Susan was so thoughtful to bring us a high chair and baby swing to use during our stay. We loved our stay and would highly recommend it. Thank you for sharing such a lovely place !
We were there for three nights and had a wonderful time. Susan was lovely and greeted us when we arrived. It's a great neighborhood and we enjoyed walking around. The cottage is so cute and perfect for two!
Susan and Jim have created a quiet and calming oasis in the midst of crazy Berkeley. It was perfect for my week stay. I appreciated going "home" to an extremely clean and well appointed house. They did everything I would have done if I had a rental and even more.
