Beautiful Ground Floor Apartment, Centre Amsterdam
This canal house is in the heart of Amsterdam at top location in safe and quiet area within minutes walk from Prinsengracht, museums, theaters, shops and public transport. This very spacious house(100sq meter 1000 sq feet) has been rebuilt in 188 …
We had a very comfortable stay in this spacious and comfortably furnished apartment, which is well-situated on a quiet canal near the heart of the city and close to the museums. There were also a number of good cafés and restaurants in the immediate area and a small art-house cinema just the other side of the canal. Strongly recommended.
We are two 'older' folks who came to Amsterdam for art and the art museums. And we wanted to walk to them. This studio apartment was perfectly located for this. Additionally, we wished to cook most of our meals and were able to do so with ease. The flat was also located within walking distance of a large grocery store - Albertheim. The kitchen is compact, but stocked well enough with assorted pots, pans, and dishes. Our stay was for 10 days, so we had need of laundry and were able to use the washer and dryer. Our on-site guy, Ivan, was able to answer all our questions and set us off in the right direction for our needs. The property was clean and well-maintained. We needed two beds. There were 2 twin beds with brand new mattresses which were quite comfortable. The linens were a little on worn/mis-matched side of things, but still were adequate for our needs. The photos do accurately reflect the flat... which isn't large, but still had plenty of space for 2 people. The location can be a bit noisy on weekends due to there being a hostel just down the block and very near the busy area near the Liedesplein etc... so bring ear plugs! For us it was all part of the atmosphere of Amsterdam! We loved Amsterdam and if we return, would book this flat again.
Marcel was a wonderful host! The apartment was cozy, clean, and comfortable. We really felt like we were in an old world European city! The location is fabulous! We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. There are several great pubs and restaurants in the area. After a long day of sightseeing, we were happy to return to this great apartment. We slept well and were ready for another day of sightseeing in this wonderful city. Would love to return every year!
Marcel's beautiful place was all we could ask for. We were 3 women traveling, my mom, sister and I, ages, 40, 41 and 61. Marcel's place was a beautiful, centrally located and safe location. The two bedrooms are adjacent to each other however each is very roomy and comfortable. One could pull me as the princess from the princess and the pea children's book and I slept in the bed in the middle room and I slept like a baby! My mom and sister shared the back bed room and as well slept very well! So very comfy both beds were! The apartment was a block from the tram as well as the boat taxis. But really walking distance from anywhere. We walked home one evening after hours from the central station (trams stop running at midnight from central station, we were not aware) at 1am and it only took about 40 minutes. The kitchen had all we needed and we used it every day! We were right off of a major canal so we were able to see the parade right in front of our door. There is only a small street you cross to actually sit on a canal shoot and have your legs dangling off the side! Marcel is easily accessible. We had problems lighting the stove and she was only a phone call away and actually stopped by a little later to make sure we had what we we needed! Thanks Marcel! Should we return to Amsterdam, we will definitely plan early enough to reserve a room w/ Marcel. Thanks Marcel, for your hospitality!
What a delightful apartment. Rather than repeat what the other reviewers have already mentioned I will just use a pro/con list.
view of canal from big windows
back bedroom has a very comfy bed
furnishings are all comfortable - we loved the giant sofa!
excellent lighting in most of the apartment
very few stairs - no steep staircases
living room is grand and lovely - the ceiling adornment & chandelier are so pretty
bright natural light & morning sunlight fills front room
dishwasher & washing machine are so convenient
kitchen is cozy & well outfitted
gorgeous molding in hallway also front door is stunning
location is fantastic- tram stop very close by and neighborhood is beautiful
lots of travel books on amsterdam and other reading books too
Ivan was such a polite attentive host - really nice
Didn't meet Marcelle but she was very prompt in answering questions
dingy carpet in both bedrooms should be replaced. hardwood or laminate would be better/cleaner
mattress provided in middle room is not a proper bed and too low to the ground according to my friend who slept on it
vey poor lighting in middle room
not much privacy between bedrooms - curtains yes, but no soundproofing
Overall I enjoyed my 2 weeks in this apartment very much and even with some issues as detailed in Cons, I would still return. I loved my back bedroom and cute little bathroom ensuite - quirky & charming. No place is ever perfect, but for me this canal apartment is very very close!
This is a great place to stay. It is in a sublime location. The fixtures and furnishings are delightful; elegant yet functional and cosy. The kitchen is well equipped, and the bathroom, shower room and wc are well designed. There is a generous, well loved feel about the place with plenty of towels and bedding, etc.. The proprietor and host made us feel absolutely at home, and we hope to stay there again soon!
We have been staying in this apartment (and another upstairs) every other year since 1996.
Our hosts are wonderful and the apartment has wonderful views, as well as a great, quiet location. Shopping, entertainment and museums are steps away. A few restaurants as well ! (200?).
It is almost impossible to find a GROUND floor apartment in Amsterdam, by that I mean if you are advised your location is on the FIRST floor you WILL be climbing one flight of stairs to come and go. We learned this by staying with someone on 'the second floor' (elsewhere, but standard in Europe), which was Three flights upstairs.
This is a rare and hard to find gem in Central Amsterdam. We look forward to our next stay there.
Just don't use the fireplace as there is a large TV there!
our visit was from May 2, thru May 8th 2013.
from the airport we caught a bus almost directly to the apt. we were given very good directions.
Bus was only about 4 euro each.
We were in the center of things and great tram system.
Everything you read in the reviews is correct, I would return there anytime.
3 of us were there and we used each of the rooms as a bedroom, which we could close off from the other area's of the apt. Very roomy kitchen and good internet connection. It was private and no problems with the bathrooms.
enjoy your stay.
Perfect location on a quiet, clean canal street yet steps away from everything.
Spacious with many rooms on different levels, quaint and interesting. Huge soaking tub and comfortable queen size master room bed.
Large well-equipped kitchen if you want to cook and we loved having the washer and dryer to use mid-week.
Our host Marcelle and manager Ivan were lovely people and very helpful.
We visited the apartment (3 girls) for a fun weekend in Amsterdam and were absolutely delighted when we arrived at the apartment. This apartment is extremely spacious, perfectly located (if you want to experience Amsterdam a little away from the main tourist spots, but still close enough to get anywhere in the city centre quickly by foot) and had every little thing taken care of from extra pillows and blankets to kitchen utensils not to mention a fantastic roll top bath. The apartment overlooks a very nice canal in a lovely part of Amsterdam and it is fun to sit at the window and watch the world go by, or a few steps and you are out on the street, with everything you need within 5 minutes walk e.g. clubs, grocery shops, cafes, art galleries, great transport links and lots more.
Marcelle and Ivan were a delight to deal with, made us feel very welcome and ensured that we had absolutely everything we needed.
All in all a perfect weekend in Amsterdam and I will only return to this apartment from now on!! Highly recommended for couples, families (the place is much bigger than I expected and has several bathrooms/toilets) and, as we had, a fab weekends away with the girls :)
We’ve just returned from one of our most wonderful weeks away. What a gracious place this is! And host, Marcelle, and her assistant Ivan, were helpful and kind. Our stay could not have been better.
From the photos listed on the site, we knew it would be lovely and homey, but were not prepared for the feeling of being 'in' the rooms and living there. The front room, formal yet comfortable - with nearly 9-foot high windows - has the most wonderful original architectural details. The large plaster molding, a sculpted medallion from which the chandelier hangs, had the feeling of 17C interiors seen in paintings. What a treat to simply sit back and contemplate this voluptuous carving, or enjoy the mechanics of the complex window shutters that fold back to let the morning light fill the room. Across from the sofa is a beautiful Belgian marble fireplace, which now houses the TV we never watched. Sitting in the white chairs facing out to the canal and its waterway activity was sufficient entertainment – and it was a relaxing place to either eat breakfast or enjoy an aperitif.
Now, for cooks: the fabulous kitchen makes it hard to decide where to hang out. It is not easy to understand from the photos, but there is a skylight that floods the table below, and a unique corner window looks out at the spiral staircase up to the deck above. This is a great room with lots of character. The cupboards are filled with an assortment of dishes, and we had no problem finding all the pans for our preparations. The stove is excellent, with 6 gas burners, and a cute marble sink. There’s a dishwasher, and a fridge more like a cupboard under the counter. But, it was perfect.
The grocery store we preferred - of the four we visited - was the Albert Hein on the Elandsgracht. The store had everything we needed, and is located near some great little shops for cheese, wine and bread. Also, an organic butcher has lovely products. It’s an easy walk from the apartment, up the Prinsengracht.
Our weather for a week in Amsterdam was less than favorable, however, having the lovely apartment to return to was such a plus. Good heat and never a problem with hot water. Everything worked perfectly. We probably spent about half our time in Amsterdam ‘at home’ as it was so nice. I’d recommend this to any of our friends, and only hope that when we’re ready to return, it will not be impossible to book!
My wife and I stayed in this apartment with our older son for 2 weeks. The apartment is located in one of the best streets in Amsterdam and is easy to get anywhere.
Many reviewers have listed all the fantastic features of this apartment and they are all correct, the apartments location, furnishings and general elegance made this a great place to come home to at the end of each day. The view from the lounge room window of the canal and street is the best you will find - it's simply beautiful and a great place to sit and have a wine.
Marcelle the owner will assist with anything at anytime and is a great wealth of information on the city. I can also state that you can absolutely be guaranteed of dealing with her she is honest and generous.
My family just loved the apartment and we will definitely be returning for an extended stay. I would highly recommend this apartment to anyone who visits Amsterdam as I am absolutely sure there is not a better find.
In summary, my family and I have rented many apartments around the world, this one is our favourite, if this apartment is available rent it, you will absolutely not be disappointed and it will make your stay in this beautiful city a memorable one.
This was my 14th or so trip to Amsterdam so I am familiar with the layout of the city and the best neighborhoods to stay in. So I was thrilled when I found out that Marcelle had availability for the entire month of November!
The location: a 5 minute walk to the Leidseplein or if you like; a 2 minute walk to Prinsengracht, one of the 4 main canals in the canal ring. Trams run every 5 minutes from Leidseplein to Centraal Station and take 15 minutes so it's easy to get to the train station to make a day trip. There is a police department right across the canal adding a bit of extra security to the neighborhood.
The apartment is a "bel-etage", meaning ground leve,l but slightly elevated from the street, so you walk up 5 steps to get inside and the main living room has a commanding view of the Leidsegracht canal and all its passersby.
The apartment is basically 3 rectangular rooms, each slightly smaller than the next, but all are connected; or if you like you can close them off (like at night) and use the hallway to access each of the 3 rooms. The hallway also has a toilet and leads 5 steps down to the kitchen or 10 steps up to the bathtub. The rear room (of the 3 big rooms) has a shower/toilet. I wrote this description because the photos left me curious as to the layout until we arrived in Amsterdam.
We spent 30 days with a 7 month and 22 month old. The 22 month old was able to navigate the steps to the kitchen with no problem but we made sure she stayed off the steps leading to the bathtub.
The kitchen was great: microwave/convection combo oven, blender, fridge, freezer, 4 top gas burner, oven, plenty of dishes and glasses and a nice skylite to see how the weather is before heading out after morning coffee. The grocery store is a 12 minute walk along the canal (no credit cards!)
The main room is where we spent most of our time chilling out on the big couch, watching TV, or the world go by our window. The building was built in the late 1800's so the classic ornamental features inside the apartment made it feel like a cool time warp!
The hosts were fantastic, lending us a house phone and cellphone to keep my wife and I in touch with each other when we were apart. The also gave us a great rate on a bike rental.
We stayed at this wonderful apartment for 12 nights. Our 20 year old son came with us on this vacation. He was very happy that he had his own room. The apartment is extremely roomy, so if you are traveling with a few people you will not feel cramped together. The location was perfect for all 3 of us. The Leidesplein & the tram was a 2 minute walk. The major museums are within walking distance or you can take the tram. The apartment has a lot of character & details. It's on the 1st floor so you don't have stairs to climb plus you have a view of the canal which made our stay extra special.
