Home Rental FAQs
What are home rentals?
Want to see what it's like to live like a local? Now you can.
We've pulled together home rental listings from the world's top vacation rental and short-term rental sites. This means that you can now rent a local home directly from the owners of the property. Local rentals can be rooms, apartments, houses, houseboats, bungalows, cabins and even castles.
What's the difference between Tripping with a local and renting from a local?
If you stay with a local member of the Tripping community, you'll be hosted for free. Tripping homestays tend to involve a stronger social component, where the host and Tripper share time, stories and meals together.
When you rent from a local through one of our partners, you'll be exchanging money for your accommodations. Some peer-to-peer rental hosts will socialize with their guests, but travelers are expected to be a bit more independent, especially if they're renting a space while the property owner is away.
Does Tripping directly offer local rental listings?
No - all of the rental listings are coming from other sites. We've simply aggregated them so that you can easily see them all in one place.
- Where does Tripping get its local rental listings?
Do any of the rental sites charge booking fees?
It depends - some of our rental partners charge booking fees, but others don't.
If there is a booking fee, is it included in the listing price?
No - any booking fees will be calculated during checkout on our partners' sites.
What currency does a home rental listing reflect?
Home rental listings are displayed in the currency of the country where the property is located.
Will my booking be done on Tripping or will I be taken to another site to complete my transaction?
Once you've selected a rental, you'll be taken to the rental partner's website to complete your transaction.
Can I list my house as a local rental through Tripping?
Yes - thanks to one of our partners, you'll be able to list your space directly on Tripping. Click here to learn more.
I'm a host on Tripping. Can I list my house with Tripping's rental partners as well?
Yep - you're free to list your house with our rental partners and also be a local host with Tripping. In fact, renting your home while you're away may be a nice way to fund your travels.
Will I need to register for an account on the rental site when I make a booking?
Yes - you'll have to sign-up for an account before completing a booking. All of our partners offer quick and easy registration.
Can I charge people for staying with me via Tripping's community?
What is collaborative consumption and how does this fit into it?
Collaborative Consumption is a term that's used to describe the rapidly growing movement of sharing, trading, lending, renting, gifting and swapping resources.
Tripping relies on many of the cornerstones of Collaborative Consumption to work. Our local Trippers share their extra space, local knowledge and friendships while our discovery engine allows travelers to participate in the rapidly growing peer-to-peer rental market. Click here to learn more.
What's the difference between a vacation rental and a short-term rental?
With a vacation rental, you'll typically be renting an entire property while the owner is away. Additionally, vacation rentals often have a minimum stay requirement.
Short-term rentals include both private room and whole unit rentals. Sometimes the property owners will be home while renting to you, but other times you may have the space to yourself. Short-term rentals also tend not to have minimum stay requirements.
I only need a single room. Can I find that on Tripping?
Yes! With over 1 million rental listings, you'll be able to find the perfect accommodation for your trip.
I want to rent an entire house during my trip. Can I find that with Tripping's discovery engine?
Yes! We have the largest selection of vacation and short-term rentals on the market, which means if you want a castle, you'll find a castle.
Are there minimum stay requirements for local rental listings?
It depends - some local rental listings have minimum stay requirements, but others are available on a nightly basis. Information about minimum stay requirements can be found in the details popover for each listing.
I've stayed with a local Tripping host before. How will renting from a local be different?
When you rent from a local, you should prepare to be more independent than when you stay with a Tripping host. Though some rental hosts may socialize or offer tips about their city, it's best not to expect or rely on it. And in some cases, the owner may not be home at all.
Keep in mind that you can always connect with local Tripping members for coffee, drinks or information about the destination you are visiting.
Do I have to be a member of Tripping to use the discovery engine?
Nope - Tripping's discovery engine is available to everybody. But if you're a member of Tripping, you'll have access to cool features like saved Favorites and reward programs.
Is it safe to transfer money to an individual as opposed to a hotel?
Yes! All of our rental partners offer secure payment methods that keep your financial information private. Additionally, many of our partners have systems in place that will ensure you get the accommodation you're expecting before transferring the money to your rental host.
How can I tell if a rental host is trustworthy?
All of our partners offer a rating and/or review system that can help you make smart decisions about which rental host to choose. Additionally, each partner provides tools for you to communicate with your rental host so you can talk or email with them before you book or arrive. Just as when you meet other Tripping members, we highly recommend that you take the time to communicate and learn about your host.
Are taxes included in the listing price?
It depends - each partner handles tax differently. Please be sure to read their FAQs so that you can make an informed decision before booking.
Why do some rentals appear more than once?
Some home owners offer several rooms in the same house, so their listings may seem to appear multiple times.
If I have feedback about my local rental experience, who should I tell?
If you'd like to leave feedback about the rental, you should use the tools provided by the site where you booked your accommodation.
Where should I leave ratings and reviews for a local rental listing?
After your trip, you should leave your feedback on the rental site where you booked your accommodation.
