One of the great travel meccas, the island of Mykonos is a whitewashed Aegean paradise. Every summer, the Greek island attracts all types of visitors including college students, families, surfers and celebrities, who all come to enjoy the hot summer days and sparkling blue waters. The main town of Chora is a picturesque collection of winding streets and whitewashed steps filled with traditional style houses, churches, little shops, art galleries, bars, cafes and restaurants. It offers a lively nightlife, including a number of gay bars.
The southern coast of the island is home to the most cosmopolitan beaches, including Paradise and Super Paradise, and is popular with the party crowd. Families flock to the beaches of Psaroú and Órnos. Travelers looking for more tranquility head to beaches in the north of the island such as Ayios Stéfanos, Agrári and Kápari. If you’re headed there this summer, you’ll find fewer crowds in June. Travelers planning to head there in August: you should book your Mykonos accommodation now, as the island attracts more visitors later in the summer.
