Founded over 2,700 years ago, The Eternal City is filled with fascinating bits of history for the traveler to explore. Narrowing the list down to 5 must-see spots was therefore a challenge, but here our our top 5 things to do in Rome.
Marvel at the Colosseum
A marvel of engineering, the Colosseum can accommodate 50,000 spectators. It famously hosted gladiator combats and was the scene of incredible theatrical spectacles, including mock sea battles and wild animal fights. Today it remains an enduring symbol of the Roman Empire.
Throw a coin into the Fontana Trevi
Tossing coins into the Trevi Fountain is a custom based on the belief that those who throw a coin into the fountain are sure to return to Rome. Regardless of the belief holding true, the fountain is well worth a visit; at roughly 85 feet high and 65 feet wide, it is the world’s largest Baroque fountain and is actually the work of a series of architects. It was also the setting for a classic scene in the famous Federico Fellini film, La Dolce Vita.
Hop on a bus to the Vatican
No trip to Rome would be complete without a visit to Vatican City. There you can marvel at the St Peter’s Basilica, the site of Saint Peter’s tomb and one of the holiest spots for the Roman Catholic Church. Its impressive dome was designed by Michaelangelo and is tall enough to fit the Statue of Liberty under it. The Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, are another must-see when visiting Vatican City.
Explore the Pantheon
Impressive on many levels, the Pantheon has the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome and is the only building from Graeco-Roman times which has remained remarkably intact and in continuous use. It was also reported to have been so admired by Michaelangelo he deemed it the work of angels.
Check out the Roman Forum
A wisp of its former glory, one can still picture the ruins of the Roman Forum the way they were in their heyday. It was the hub of public life in Rome; it was where citizens congregated to do business, a venue for public speeches, the site of elections and triumphal processions and also a site for criminal trials.
